Zynga, the prominent social gaming firm, announced in July that it is giving up its plans to expand in the US. Accordingly, the company took the required steps to request Nevada’s regulatory body to withdraw its interactive gambling license and regulators have agreed to do so.
In an official statement, the company said: “Zynga believes its biggest opportunity is to focus on free to play social games. While the company continues to evaluate its real money gaming products in the United Kingdom test, Zynga is making the focused choice not to pursue a license for real money gaming in the United States. Zynga will continue to evaluate all of its priorities against the growing market opportunity in free, social gaming, including social casino offerings.”
Initially, it was believed that Zynga would partner with Wynn Resorts to launch an online poker product in Nevada. But the deal never went through and Wynn ended up signing a partnership deal with 888 Holdings.
Wynn Resorts, a giant casino gaming company belonging to the Las Vegas based billionaire entrepreneur Steve Wynn, announced on Monday that it would partner with 888 Holdings. Previously, Avenue Capital Group had teamed up with 888 Holdings to develop the All American Poker Network (AAPN) and any online poker room launched by Wynn will belong to this brand new network.
According to the gambling laws in Nevada, only land casino companies based in Nevada can offer online gambling service, but offshore providers of Internet gambling software and online gambling companies can partner with Nevada-based gambling companies.
In an official statement, Brian Mattingley, chief executive officer for 888, said: “This is exactly the type of partnership we’ve envisioned when we formed AAPN with our partners in Avenue Capital. The challenge of establishing a robust, entertaining offering with ample player liquidity is one of our prime goals, in direct continuum to 888’s success in other regulated markets such as Spain and Italy.”
He further said: “Wynn’s market footprint and reputation will allow it to leverage our technology and products as it did so successfully in the land-based world.” 888 is currently supplying the software for Caesars Entertainment’s WSOP.com, which was recently launched in Nevada. Besides, the company has also teamed up with Treasure Island Casino.
Although Zynga, which was launched in 2007 and has its headquarters in San Francisco, has decided to back out of the US, it will continue to offer its Facebook social poker games.
