The 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) will run from 30 Sep till Nov 23 at the Rio in Las Vegas, Nevada. The WSOP is reported to have sent out an email encouraging its dealers to get a COVID-19 jab in exchange for a cash gift of $250 and an entry into a $25,000 giveaway.
Get vaccinated and get free cash
Different states and organizations across the world that are pro-vaccine have adopted a variety of different strategies to get individuals to take the vaccine.
New Jersey came out with its ‘Shot and a Beer’ program that gave away a free beer to individuals over 21 who took the shot. New York came out with a ‘Vax & Scratch’ promotion that gave individuals who took the jab a $20 lottery ticket to a $5 million giveaway.
A marijuana dispensary in Michigan ran a ‘Pot for Shots’ campaign encouraging individuals to take the jab in exchange for free pot. So it’s not entirely surprising to see the WSOP adopt a similar strategy and offer ‘Shot for Cash’.
Rumors are circulating that the WSOP is offering $250 in cash to all dealers that get the jab between Sep 3 and Nov 4, 2021. Dealers need to take one shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, or one shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and produce their vaccination certificate.
Those who have already taken the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or take a shot during the promo period can enter into a $25,000 promo where the winner takes home $5,000.
WSOP will allow unvaccinated dealers
The WSOP will hire hundreds of dealers as temporary staff and not make it mandatory for their temporary staff and dealers to get vaccinated. This is one of the main reasons why the WSOP is rolling out its ‘Shot for Cash’ promo to incentivize dealers to take the jab.
Poker players are confused with the policy of not making it mandatory for dealers to be vaccinated but making the jab mandatory for players who could end up sitting at a table that has an unvaccinated dealer.
Some reports suggest that the WSOP is not making the vaccination mandatory for dealers because they are struggling to hire dealers and because they expect a high attrition rate during the tournament. If WSOP dealers are going to get the jab during the tournament, they are bound to ask for time-off as they recover from the vaccine.
WSOP continues to send mixed messages
The WSOP has sent out mixed messages during the last few weeks regarding the protocols that will be in place during the 2021 WSOP. Initially, the WSOP claimed that it would remove any player who tested positive for COVID-19 or came into contact with an individual who tested positive.
This was done based on Rule 115 which also stated that the WSOP could cancel an event if any member at the table tested positive or came into contact with a positive case. The poker community wasn’t happy with this and the WSOP came out with a change.
The WSOP announced at the end of August that all players, staff, and media needed to be fully vaccinated to be able to enter the 2021 WSOP. Players needed to be fully vaccinated 14 days before they entered the WSOP and would have to wear masks at all times.
Players had concerns over the mandatory mask requirement as the State of Nevada Emergency Directive 050 makes it clear that those venues which have in place a mandatory vaccination policy do not require mandatory masks.
The WSOP released another clarification in early September and said that players only need to wear masks when moving around and do not need to wear the masks at the table!
Don’t be surprised if the WSOP makes a few more clarifications in this regard during the next couple of weeks!
