Female poker players who attend the World Series of Poker (WSOP) look forward to sitting down with each other and playing a Ladies only event which the WSOP puts together specifically for female players.

LADIES No-Limit Hold’em Championship

The WSOP like a lot of other poker operators continues to push for more women to play poker. Female poker players have complained in the past that they end up feeling uncomfortable a lot of times as they face discrimination at poker tables that are predominantly occupied by male poker players.
Female poker players have complained of sexism at the poker tables and aggressive behavior by their male counterparts. This is one of the reasons why the WSOP has tried to run an ‘exclusive’ Ladies only event during each live poker festival.
Event #22: LADIES No-Limit Hold’em Championship started on Oct 11 and got a great response as over 600 female poker players from all over the world took part in the event. The WSOP does not make this an exclusive Ladies only event because it is against the law to prevent male poker players from taking part.
The WSOP makes this Ladies event special by giving female poker players a 90 percent discount on the buy-in. The buy-in for the Event #22: LADIES No-Limit Hold’em Championship was set at $10,000 but female players could buy-in for $1,000.

Male Poker Player Signs Up

Minnesota poker player Tom Hammers decided to be a part of the LADIES No-Limit Hold’em Championship. Hammers put down $10,000 as buy-in fees while his wife and stepdaughter entered for $1,000. Hammers presence at this Ladies only event caused a lot of female poker players to feel uncomfortable and also created quite a buzz on the floor.
Hammers did not get to spend a lot of time at the poker table as he was eliminated quickly and did not cashout. When he was eliminated, the female poker players at his table stood and up cheered his exit. This has been the tradition at the WSOP Ladies event as whenever a male poker player shows up, his exit is celebrated.
Hammers later explained why he wanted to be part of the Ladies event. In his mind, he felt that his presence would get the media talking and raise awareness of issues that women all around the world face on a daily basis. Hammers who has over $300,000 in live poker winnings according to the Hendon Mob, promised that he would donate all his winnings to a charity that would benefit women.

Hammers Story Not Believable

Some poker players bought into his story and said he did a good thing for the 2021 WSOP ladies event as he boosted the prize pool by $10,000 and was also going to fund a charity.
When Hammers was asked what charity he intended to donate his winnings, he wasn’t able to provide a specific answer. He said if he won, he would ended up donating to either a charity that supported homeless women or a charity that supported women who had gone through domestic abuse.
Katie Stone said Hammers was being disrespectful and selfish no matter what his intentions were while Kat Martin said if he really wanted to help a charity that sponsored women, he should have donated his $10,000 buy-in directly.
The general consensus among female poker players was that they signed up at the Ladies event to play against female poker players and not a male poker player. Hammers did not act like a gentleman not matter what his intentions were!
If Hammers wanted people to talk about him, he succeeded!
