The 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) is currently underway at the Rio in Las Vegas. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle at the Rio, the WSOP is asking fans to send in their votes and nominate who they want to enter the Poker Hall of Fame (PHoF).
Fans will need to head over to the WSOP website and fill in a form to vote which player they want to see as the 60th member of the prestigious PHoF. Fans will have time till October 14 to send in their nominations.
How The Nomination Process Works
Fans need to keep the strict criteria that the WSOP has in place before they cast their votes. Nominees can include both players as well as those in the media. They will have to meet the following conditions in order to be considered as the next 2021 PHoF inductee.
The age criteria is that they need to be a minimum of 40 years or more before they are eligible to be inducted into the PHoF. Their accomplishments at the poker table must be against quality competition that the poker world recognizes and must be in high stakes poker. Nominees must also have the respect of their peers and the global poker community. All players must have a record of spending a long and consistent amount of time playing poker.
Non-playing poker players can also be nominated provided they have made significant contributions in the past to promoting and growing the game of poker worldwide. Their overall work must have produced long lasting results and must have left a positive impression on the poker community.
Fans can register their 2021 nominee in under less than 2 minutes by filling up a simple form. While entering your nominee, you will have to fill up a box titled ‘reason why’ where you need to list out why you think your nominee is entitled to be in the PHoF.
All fan submissions must be sent in by Oct 14 after which they will be reviewed and the top 10 nominees will be shortlisted. This shortlist will then be reviewed in detail by the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council.
How The Voting Process Works
This shortlist will then be presented to the living members of the PHoF which includes the likes of Doyle Brunson, Phill Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Johnny Chan. They will then cast their votes based on the 10 nominations and the winner will be the 60th inductee in the PHoF.
The WSOP used to induct up to 2 members each year in the PHoF but decided to change that policy in 2020 and induct only 1 individual into the PHoF. The WSOP said that it wanted to slow down the process and only ensure that individuals who would be considered as legends get inducted into the PHoF. The WSOP did not want to induct good and great players but make a clear cut distinction between great and legendary.
Huck Seed who won the 1996 WSOP Main Event was inducted into the PHoF in 2020. The WSOP will announce the 2021 PHoF inductee during the 1,979 Poker Hall of Fame Bounty No-Limit Hold’em which takes place on Nov 17. The WSOP will put together a special induction ceremony to welcome the 60th PHoF inductee.
The WSOP will is expected to release the list of the 10 nominees for the PHoF sometime during the fourth week of October. Some of the nominees that could be on the top 10 shortlist include Chris Ferguson, Mike Matusow and Antonio Esfandiari.
