The World Poker Tour (WPT) has confirmed that it has entered into a partnership with online poker operator partypoker, to create the inaugural WPT Online Series (WPTOS). This new online poker tournament isslated to run from May 10-26, 2020, exclusively on the partypoker software.
This is the WPT’s first online poker event, as they have mainly focused on live events in previous years. The WPT has been in the poker industry since 2002, and holds a number of prominent live tournaments every year.
The WPTOS will contain 10 poker events, and a total of $30 million in guaranteed prizes. There is at least $15 million in prizes for the WPT championships, while the remaining prizes will be paid out to winners of side events.
Things to Watch out for in the WPTOS
The WPTOS is the first WPT event to be conducted online. The highlight event for the WPTOS will be its Main Event, the $3,200 buy-in WPT Online Championship, which holds a guaranteed prize pool of $5 million. The Online Championship will take place throughout the entirety of the WPTOS, and there will be five starting days for the event, starting on May 10.
Aside from the WPT Online Championship, the WPT’s marquee properties—the WPT 500 and the WPT DeepStacks will also be featured in the WPTOS.
The WPT DeepStacks tournament is set to close out the WPTOS and will run from May 25-26, and feature a $1 million guaranteed prize pool. This event is a favorite of poker players who enjoy deep stack play and more complex decisions over more streets.
The WPT 500 event is set to be held on May 10 to 18, also with a $1 million prize pool—10 flights have been currently confirmed to be in the schedule.
The WPT DeepStacks Online event will close the WPTOS festivities. It will take place on May 25-26, with a prize pool of $1 million guaranteed.
Nine of ten events will be in No Limit Texas Hold`em, with one Pot Limit Omaha event: the $5,200 WPT PLO, to be held on May 14.
Other highlights include the $25,000 WPT Super High Roller on May 21, which will attract some of the biggest poker names in town, and the $5,200 WPT Bounty Hunter on May 10-18.
Satellite tournaments to enter WPTOS events will likely be held in the weeks before the series kicks off. However, there is no current word on the satellite schedules.
WPT Excited About Inaugural WPTOS
Adam Pliska, WPT CEO, heralded the WPTOS as the next level to WPT and partypoker’s partnership. Pliska said that WPTOS is a great way of poker players from different countries to play against each other without leaving their home. To capitalize on what they expect to be a popular series, Pliska ensured that the WPTOS will have different buy-ins so that players of all shapes and sizes can play.
WPT’s Europe vice-president Hermance Blum also expressed his support for the upcoming online event. According to Blum, WPT events on partypoker will have $7 million in prizes—in addition to the WPT Online Championship winner, who will also receive entry to the WPT Tournament of Champions.
The initiative shown by the WPT and partypoker has resulted in a fortuitous opportunity in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has led to dozens of live poker events being cancelled or suspended. In fact, both the WPT and partypoker have already cancelled live series—the WPTOS should help them recoup some of their losses.
As more and more poker players all over the world are asked to quarantine themselves at home, they will have to find something to do with their time on lockdown. The WPTOS is a perfect way for poker players to play the game they love without endangering themselves or others.
If the COVID-19 lockdown continues, live poker players are definitely going to find it difficult to find any live action, irrespective of which part of the world they live in. They best keep their eyes out on the online poker market as one can expect to find a number of new events and high stake online poker events taking place!
