Lena Evans, the founder of Poker League of Nations and top female poker pro Maria Ho will join the former first lady of California Maria Shriver to host a special women’s charity poker tournament on October 1. The winner of this charity poker tournament will receive a seat at the $10,000 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event plus a number of special perks.
Charity Poker Tournament
The charity poker tournament will take place on October 1 at the Jamul Casino in San Diego. The online buy-in is fixed at $250 while the buy-in at the door is fixed at $280. The tournament will commence at 6 p.m. and will finish on the same night.
This special poker tournament will raise funds for Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) charity which was founded by Shriver. Her father Sargent Shriver was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and battled the disease until he passed away in 2011.
The WAM charity is looking to raise money to fund Alzheimer’s research as the disease is incurable. Some of the proceeds will be used to fund other WAM projects. Although Shriver is hosting this charity poker tournament, she will not take part in it as she is not a poker player.
Top Poker Pros support WAM
Some of the biggest names in poker have come out and shown their support for the WAM charity poker tournament. Phil Hellmuth, Greg Raymer and Maria Ho are just few of the names that have shown their support.
In a statement, Hellmuth said “A close relative of mine had Alzheimer’s for 14 years, and it was tough for all concerned. It’s my pleasure to be a part of raising money to help eradicate this nasty disease. From a science perspective: it seems like we may be able to eradicate more diseases than anyone in my generation could have imagined. We just need money, we have the moxie!”
Greg Raymer said he would have loved to have been present for the event as it was a great cause. He encouraged the poker community to get behind this event and show their support.
Special Prizes On Offer
The biggest attraction is a $10,000 Main Event seat to the 2021 WSOP Main Event that starts on Nov 4 at the Rio in Las Vegas, Nevada. If that wasn’t enough incentive to take part in this charity poker tournament, there are a number of other special perks.
All of the final tablists will get special poker gear merchandise, plus a weeklong vacation in a beautiful residence in Costa Rica. The perks don’t stop there as there are also special private poker lessons up for grabs.
These private lessons will be from the best poker players in the world including Phil Hellmuth, Maria Ho, Greg Raymer, Chris Moneymaker and Antonio Esfandiari. These poker pros have volunteered their time as their way of giving back to WAM.
Players, who are unable to attend the event in person but still want to donate to WAM, can do so online. You can do so from any part of the world by paying a $100 buy-in to a 50/50 raffle. Once again, all proceeds from the raffle will be used for WAM’s on-going projects and research into Alzheimer’s.
In a statement, Maria Ho said “I jumped at the opportunity to be part of this event and support such a worthwhile cause. WAM is an organization that has focused its efforts on researching why this terrible disease affects women more than men and helps provide support in all areas for those affected. I hope everyone will join the fight and donate!”
