Vanessa Selbst is one of the top female poker pros in the world having won over $11 million in live poker cashouts. A member of Team PokerStars, Selbst is the only female poker pro to have won three World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets in open events. Selbst has found herself in a spot of trouble recently after entering into a bet with fellow poker pro Jason Mercier.

Selbst has apparently wagered $10,000 with 180:1 odds that Mercier will not be able to win three WSOP bracelets at the 2016 WSOP. This means that Selbst has put herself on the line for $1.8 million and Mercier gladly accepted the bet. The chances of a poker pro winning three WSOP bracelets in a single season is extremely difficult but has been done in the past.

During the last 47 years, only five poker pros have managed to win three WSOP bracelets in a single season and Jeff Lisandro was the last man to have done it in 2009. However Mercier has been on a roll at the 2016 WSOP and has already won two WSOP bracelets and narrowly missed out on a third. Mercier won both the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Championship and the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship to pick up two bracelets and finished as runner-up in the $10,000 Razz Championship missing out on a possible third bracelet and an extra $1.8 million from Selbst.

With 30 WSOP bracelets still open in the 2016 WSOP season, Mercier is not only looking to pick up his third bracelet but create a new record by winning four bracelets in a season. Selbst has tried to back out from the bet by sending out quite a few tweets stating that she was inebriated when she placed the bet and wanted Mercier to drop out.

However Mercier has not been willing to back out of the bet and has called Selbst out on Twitter. Mercier disagreed with the fact that Selbst was drunk when she made the bet at the PokerStars team dinner and has also declined her offer of $100k to forget the bet.

Selbst posted a long tweet trying to explain what exactly happened. Selbst said “I’m not calling Jason evil; I’m saying I expected him to be more compassionate towards me given the nature of the bet and the situation. He didn’t and that was unfortunately how he chose to handle it.”
