Harry Reid is one of the various legislators who are “for” online poker legalization. Recently, Reid claimed that the internet poker legislation “will get done”. Harry Reid sounds extremely optimistic for the same, and whether what he has said falls into place will depend on the Debt Super Committee.
This new legislation that involves the regulation of internet poker and its licensing will rake in billions of dollars and the debt savings requires at least $1.5 to be brought in by the next ten years, hence internet poker would be the easiest way to do so.
The Budget Control Act of 2011 brought in the debt super committee, and the agreement that was signed and agreed upon by President Obama. The formation of the committee and its power is a separate story altogether. What needs to be known is that once this committee is put onto a bill then that bill is permanent, and would not be ignored easily. Henceforth, the fate of internet poker legalization in the United States rests in the hands of politicians and is not related to any kind of bill or proposal.
Poker Players Alliance’s John Pappas spoke up in regards to this, “If we’re able to get a lot of PPA members tuned up to contact members of the committee and say to include online poker, I think when it comes up in their discussions that it will be much more palatable to them than if they go into this without any understanding that there are a bunch of people out there who care about this,” He said. “We don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket but, if we’re looking at something between now and the end of the year, this is our best shot.”
The committee has equal numbers from the Democrats as well as Republican sides. “The people holding the cards I think will be Kyl and Reid,” said John Pappas.
Since Reid has appointed people who are on the committee, and since they want to increase Congress revenue without increasing the taxes, this is an easy answer for them. The catch here is that there is no known reference to mention the date on which the super committee will start working and hence everything still hangs in the air. Although the support for internet poker seems to be enough in the government right now, the PPA has still recommended its members to show their support of the legislation in every way they can.
