The first major live poker tournament of 2017 will be the PokerStars Championship in the Bahamas that is scheduled to start on Jan 6, 2017. This is a new offering from PokerStars, the biggest online poker website in the world and both players and organizers will be looking to see how the Bahamas Championship turns out. The tournament will be hosted by the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort.

PokerStars has run a similar event every year in the Bahamas called the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) but recently decided to retire the tournament along with the European Poker Tour as the company looks to come up with new offerings that are designed to increase its global presence, target the recreational player and promote the game of poker.

The 2016 PCA was won by poker pro Mike “SirWatts” Watson who has won more than $9 million in career prize money based on the Hendon Mob. The PCA which was launched in 2004 tends to attract players from all over the world and previous winners include the likes of Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Galen Hall and Gus Hansen.

The PCA Main Event used to have a buy-in set at $10,300 but in 2016 the organizers decided to reduce the buy-in to $5,000. The 2017 PokerStars Championship will also have a $5,000 buy-in for the Main Event which runs from Jan 8 – 14. Some of the other exciting events include a $100,000 Super High Roller from Jan 6 – 8, $2,200 National Championship from Jan 7 – 9, $50,000 High Roller from Jan 9 – 10, $25,750 Pot-Limit Omaha from Jan 10 – 11 and the $25,750 High Roller from Jan 12 – 14.

Players who are unable to afford high buy-ins will find a number of $1/$2 blinds for pot-limit and no-limit games. A number of poker players over the years have made it a habit of attending the PokerStars tournament in the Bahamas as it allows them to start the year in holiday mode and at the same time play the first major poker tournament in the year.

PokerStars has scheduled a number of other attractions at the Bahamas Championship which includes question and answer sessions at breakfast with PokerStars Team Pros, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, virtual reality stations and special screening parties for NFL playoff games.
