The latest heads-up match in the ongoing Galfond Challenge is currently underway. The battle between Brandon Adams and Phil Galfond got underway on July 26 at the Resorts World Las Vegas.
Both players are playing $100/$200 Pot Limit Omaha across five days of action, concluding on July 30. The goal is to play for 40 hours throughout the match, meaning Adams and Galfond will be spending eight hours each day battling it out at the table.
Since these marathon sessions are taking place live, it’s unclear whether they will be streamed, just like the previous online matches. Adams earlier announced though that he’ll be streaming parts of the action via his Instagram account. But in the absence of a livestream, Galfond will be posting daily recaps so fans can still stay updated.
As a sidebet, Galfond is putting up $150,000 to Adams’ $100,000. If Adams manages to put an end to Galfond’s winning streak, a rematch will follow right away, but the game will be played in “battleship” style, a hybrid live/online setup in which both players will play the game online on their laptops while sitting down directly in front of one another. The rematch will also involve more hands.
Will Galfond Remain Undefeated?
Phil Galfond issued a heads-up challenge to the poker world in November 2019, where he described himself as a “washed-up ex pro”. In less than 24 hours, the Run It Once founder attracted multiple challengers. So far, three matches have been completed and Galfond triumphed in all of them.
His first opponent was online legend “VeniVidi1993”. That match was the hardest for Galfond as he almost quit after being in the red for more than a million dollars halfway through the match. Galfond ultimately decided to continue and managed to turn things around during the final stages of the game, leading to his victory. He secured a modest €9,483 win, plus a €100,000 sidebet.
Galfond went on to defeat his second challenger, Ioannis “ActionFreak” Kontanatsios. He won nearly €265,000 in total, including a €150,000 sidebet.
Earlier this year, Galfond completed his third match, this time against Chance Kornuth. The initial target was to play 35,000 hands, but Kornuth decided not to proceed and conceded defeat after playing 25,400 hands. Kornuth tried his best to win and at one point in the match, the Chip Leader Coaching founder was ahead by around $344,000. Galfond was able to recover and ultimately took home $726,500 in profits, plus an additional $250K sidebet.
Bill Perkins also joined in and agreed to play 50,000 hands against Galfond, however the game remains unfinished with the duo only able to play 862 hands since the match began in April 2020. Perkins is behind by $91,705.
Epic Battle
The latest match between Galfond and Adams will be epic, as both players have impressive poker resumes. We all know Galfond is a three-time WSOP bracelet winner. His live tournament winnings currently sit at more than $2.9 million, but that’s excluding his massive earnings at the virtual felts, including the now-defunct online poker site FullTilt. He owns the Run It Once poker training site.
Adams is an accomplished poker pro as well. He has 1 WSOP gold bracelet under his name, and also scored multiple final table finishes in various major tournaments, including the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown, US Poker Open, WSOP, WSOPC, and Poker Masters (which gave him the largest cash of his career – $819,000 at the 2017 Poker Masters).
Throughout his career, Brandon Adams has earned more than $5.1 million in total live earnings. He is currently at the top of Louisiana’s all-time money list. The 42-year-old from New Orleans Louisiana has an impressive educational background as well. He earned his doctorate at the prestigious Harvard University.
Galfond is looking to secure his fourth consecutive win in the challenge. Can he do it? Let’s wait and see.
