Partypoker was considered one of the top online poker operators prior to 2006. Things changed dramatically after the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) was passed. The law prohibits businesses from getting payments connected to wagers or bets that take place over the internet. The UIGEA law basically shutdown the legalized online gambling industry in America.
Thanks to UIGEA, the publicly traded company of partypoker had to suspend all real-money operations to U.S. residents. Instead of moving on and focusing on other countries, partypoker slowed things down and looked lost for direction. The online poker operator lost considerable market share over the years and its brand value also declined.
Partypoker kept itself visible by partnering with the World Poker Tour (WPT) to sponsor live events but apart from this, there wasn’t a lot happening with partypoker. GVC Holdings, the parent company of partypoker decided in 2016 that it was time to resurrect the partypoker brand and once again become a major force in the global online poker industry. Partypoker started its quest to become a player friendly brand and made a number of changes in 2017 that has helped the online poker operator gain market share and restablish its brand this year.
PartyPoker’s Rebirth In 2017
Partypoker made it clear that one of its main strategies would be to become more player friendly. It set up a special team headed by poker player Patrick Antonius to listen to player feedback and then make changes to ensure that its offerings where player friendly. Tom Waters, the Managing Director of partypoker, credited listening to player feedback and better management for partypoker’s ultimate turn-around after a decade-long slump.
Partypoker also made a strategic decision to terminate its partnership with the WPT and went on to launch its own partypoker LIVE tournaments. The decision turned out to be a great one as these LIVE poker tournaments were well attended and player feedback was once again very positive.
Partypoker also made changes to its management and brought on experienced hands who have played a major role in transforming partypoker and turning it into one of the top brands in the online poker industry once again. Some of the new management changes included bringing back veteran Mike Sexton to be chairman of partypoker and John Duthie to head partypoker LIVE.
In a statement, Waters said “”John has had a huge impact in developing partypoker LIVE this year. He has vast experience in the field and always puts the player first. This has led to key decisions being made to ensure the tour focused on quality and player experience. His wide reach with the playing community has really helped close the gap between partypoker and its players.”
