PokerStars is the biggest online poker operator in the world and usually holds the number one position and dominates every online poker market it enters. The U.S online poker market is a very competitive market, especially in New Jersey.
WSOP/888poker which operates in partnership with Caesars usually occupies the number one spot while PokerStars operating under a license from Resorts takes the second spot.

BetMGM and Partners No 1 In NJ

A recent report from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) has shown us that WSOP/888poker and PokerStars have been surpassed by BetMGM Poker, partypoker NJ and Borgata Poker who operator under a Borgata license. BetMGM Poker and its partner sites usually end up in third place but they had a great month in September which saw them finish as the number one online poker operator in the Garden State.
BetMGM Poker and its partners brought in over $1 million in revenue during Sep, which is the first time this year that BetMGM Poker and its partners have registered a 7 figure return. This is also the first time since 2016 that BetMGM Poker and its partners have been able to finish as the top iPoker operator in New Jersey.
The numbers are impressive for BetMGM Poker and its partners as it brought in more revenue than WSOP and PokerStars. BetMGM Poker and its partners brought in 28 percent more revenue than they did in Aug 2021 and over 31 percent in revenue when compared to Sep 2020. This is huge for BetMGM Poker and its partners as Sep 2020 was a peak for online poker operators who were doing great numbers due to the extended lockdown over COVID-19.

Can BetMGM Poker Keep Its Position?

While BetMGM Poker and its partners will be very pleased with their performance in Sep 2021, the big question is whether they will be able to retain the number one position going forward.
One reason why BetMGM Poker and its partners did well in September was due to the WPT Borgata Poker Open Main Event which came with a $1 million guarantee. BetMGM Poker and its partners expected a strong response but they ended up falling just short of the $1 million prize pool. However, the overlay wasn’t much as they fell short only by $24,000.
The success of the Borgata Poker Open Main Event in September 2021 is one reason why BetMGM Poker and its partners have managed to take the number one spot in the NJ online poker market.
However, we don’t think BetMGM Poker and its partners will be able to consistently hold on to the number one spot going forward. This is because even though BetMGM Poker and its partners made more money than WSOP and PokerStars in September, they did not dominate cash game traffic. WSOP/888poker dominate cash game traffic in NJ and have a big lead over Resorts and Borgata.
If BetMGM Poker and its partners are to continue to hold onto the number one spot, they will have to run more online poker tournaments with big prize pools. That’s going to be difficult for Borgata and its licensed sites given that the popular Borgata Poker Open Main Event failed to hit its $1 million guarantee.
WSOP/888poker have done well in New Jersey during 2021. They brought in over $1.7 million in return during July 2021 when they hosted the WSOP Online Bracelet Series. We think WSOP/888poker will take over the number one spot in New Jersey once again but BetMGM Poker and its partners could push PokerStars going forward.
