There are a number of states that are currently pushing forward with legislation to regulate sports betting. The lucrative sports betting industry provides a great opportunity for state governments to bring in more revenue and New Mexico is not wasting anytime. According to recent studies, the sports betting market in New Mexico is estimated to generate between $1.2 billion to $1.45 billion a year.
The New Mexico Lottery Authority has voted unanimously in favor of creating a new game tied the outcome of numerous sports. The new game is expected to be a game changer and give gamblers in the state something new to look forward to.
How the Game Works
The game, which could be made available at Lottery outlets in four to six months, will work by allowing players to choose possible outcomes of sporting events. All of their picks must be correct for them to win.
Intralot which provides integrated gambling, interactive systems and game management services, will manage the new sports game, along with various numbers games offered by the Lottery. The company is currently handling New Mexico Lottery’s Powerball and Roadrunner Cash games. Intralot also works with other lottery authorities in multiple countries.
David Barden, the CEO of the New Mexico Lottery said the game will be very simple as the number of possible outcomes will be limited, with players only required to have correct choices for them to win.  It works similarly with existing pick’em numbers games. The payout will be derived from 58 percent of the total amount of bets placed by players. Intralot said the payout to winning players will not exceed that percentage.
To protect the integrity of games and other sporting events played by New Mexico State University teams, the new game will not be based on any of these outcomes.
Increasing Revenue, Attracting Millennials
Dan Salzwedel, chair of the lottery board, said the Lottery has made a huge step forward by creating a new game with great market appeal. The New Mexico Lottery unveiled its plans for a sports game in July of this year and has been quick to move forward with those plans.
Barden said the new sports game will feature a format that will match the demands of the millennial generation, and is estimated to generate $30 million each year which will help the Lottery in funding its tuition assistance initiative for college students.
Move Comes as Sports Betting Launches in New Mexico
The Santa Ana Pueblo tribe recently became the first tribe in the state to offer sports wagering at its casino. The Santa Ana Pueblo, which operates the Santa Ana Star is a small tribe consisting of about 500 people. Santa Ana Star has a huge gaming space offering a variety of traditional card and dice games. USBookmaking has for the first time expanded out of Nevada to manage the sports betting operations at Santa Ana Star.
The New Mexico Lottery is now pushing forward with its plans to develop the new game and quickly capitalize on this newly legalized market as sports betting is now up and running. New Mexico is the first state to make such a move of developing a lottery game linked to sports outcomes. The state has taken advantage of the Supreme Court ruling in May which struck down a federal law that allows sports betting to be offered throughout the country.
Lottery Officials Could Face Questions
While the legal team representing the New Mexico lottery are confident the new sports game could run under the same law that allows numbers games, lottery officials may still face questions from state lawmakers. The legal authority to operate a sports game will likely be put into question by some government leaders as well as a number of legislators who are against the expansion of gambling.
The state has an existing compact with tribes on Class III gaming which enables the state to get a share of the tribes slot-machine revenues. In return, the state limits off-reservation gaming. As part of the compact, tribes can offer casino-style games and sports betting. A state lottery is allowed as part of the compact, but it is still unclear what kind of lottery games can be made available.
