The approvals for their licenses were granted recently when the Nevada Gaming Commission convened a meeting in Las Vegas recently. On Oct 3, the State Gaming Control Board had given its initial approval to these three operators.

The licenses issued to the above-mentioned companies are to operate not video poker games, but real money online poker games, giving the players of Nevada a chance to play for real money against one another in a safe, licensed, and regulated gambling environment.

Regarding the competition the presence of online poker in Nevada might create for its land poker business, Bob Boughner of Boyd said that online poker will serve to strengthen its land poker industry. Besides, Nevada is now well on the way to becoming an industry leader, now that online gaming is rapidly expanding both at the state and the national level in the US. Several huge gambling companies will create their base in Nevada and will generate jobs for the people and annual revenue for the state. Far from cannibalizing the land poker business, the online poker industry will give Nevada poker players a chance to play multiple poker games simultaneously, something that is not possible in land poker room, he said.

The Nevada Gaming Commission has already issued licenses to companies such as South Point Poker, NetEffect Networks, Global Cash Access Holdings, SHFL Entertainment, Bally Technologies, PokerTrip Enterprises, and American Casino and Entertainment Properties of Las Vegas; WMS Industries of Waukegan; and Monarch Interactive and International Game Technology (IGT) of Reno. Land casino companies such as MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts have also obtained licenses.

South Point Poker, which is one of the first to get a license, is closest to getting the final approvals, which means that Nevada poker players can play online poker at South Point Poker’s online poker rooms by the close of 2012.

Boughner also revealed that Boyd is working on plans to rejuvenate its paralyzed Echelon Resort project on the strip.

Besides, Navegante Gaming’s plans to operate LVH Hotel Casino after its foreclosure have been approved. LVH Hotel Casino has stated that business will resume as usual after the foreclosure and that the hotel casino will re-employ all its employees.
