Erik Seidel won his ninth gold bracelet in the $10,000 Super MILLION$ High Roller on GGPoker, further cementing his reputation as one of the greatest poker players of all time. The American poker pro last won a World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament in 2007. His latest victory delighted a lot of poker players and fans, including his protégé, New York Times best-selling author Maria Konnikova.
As soon as she learned about Seidel’s bracelet win, Konnikova took to Twitter to congratulate her mentor, describing him as the “GOAT”, and the nicest and most amazing human. The poker GOAT debate continues as Phil Hellmuth recently said he was the poker GOAT.
Seidel was the one who relayed the good news to Konnikova via text, while she was still in the middle of a stream watching his game. While the news came as a bit of a spoiler for Konnikova, it did not diminish her excitement and joy that Seidel was able to add another feather in his cap.
Seidel Mentored Konnikova
It was through Seidel that Konnikova learned how to play poker.
The Russian-born writer first got in touch with Seidel in 2016, when she asked him to be her poker coach. During that time, Konnikova developed an interest in the game after reading John von Neumann’s work on game theory. She had no idea about the game and started from scratch. Intrigued by the game’s concepts, she began working on a book entitled The Biggest Bluff, and that inspired her to try the game herself.
Konnikova sought help from Seidel to spend a year in the poker circuit being a competitive player. Seidel guided her through, and in 2018, she took down the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure National Championship event for $84,600, just before the publication of her book.
Konnikova Amazed by Seidel’s Humility
Konnikova has nothing but praises and respect for her poker mentor. What she admires most about Seidel is his humility, given the talent and brilliance that he has. Apart from that, the guy is also family-oriented and likes to enjoy life to the fullest. Poker players with the same character and outlook as Seidel are hard to find, said Konnikova.
Having worked with Seidel for quite a while, Konnikova said the poker legend never really talked about winning another bracelet. Seidel’s main focus is the game and how to remain competitive. Konnikova said the 61-year-old considers winning another gold bracelet as a bonus, but it’s not one of his goals.
Konnikova is also impressed with Seidel’s support for women in poker. The 9-time WSOP bracelet winner has always motivated her to do her best and win. The 36-year-old said she draws inspiration from Seidel’s teachings and wisdom as she pursues her poker dreams, and when the time comes that she also wins a bracelet, Seidel would always be part of it.
Seidel Also Thriving Online
For the first time, Seidel won a gold bracelet online, a victory that also earned him his largest WSOP cash to date. The majority of his successes took place at the live felts, and unlike a lot of other poker pros, he has never really been seen as an online crusher. Seidel himself admitted that he felt so out of his element during the online competition.
But for Konnikova, Seidel’s online victory doesn’t really come as a surprise. He has the ability to thrive in any environment, be it live or online, a strong proof of how well-rounded he is as a poker player. This is why Konnikova believes that Seidel, undoubtedly, is the best there is.
Age is just a number for Seidel, as he continues to achieve great things. In January 2020, he also managed to reach the final table of the 2020 Aussie Millions, finishing fifth for $261,570. He also scored multiple cashes during last year’s WSOP Online Series on GGPoker, and in June booked a final table finish in a $10K No-Limit Hold’em tournament at the 2021 US Poker Open.
