In less than two weeks, poker players Europe will make their way to Malta to experience yet another new poker festival which has plenty of treats in store for all players. Taking place from May 13-19, the inaugural Malta Poker Championships (MPC) is being promoted as a very special poker festival combining cash games and tournament formats in one luxurious venue – the Portomaso Casino at St Julian’s.
In November 2018, Portomaso Casino also played host to the hugely successful Malta Poker Festival which ran for six days.
Unique Partnership With Cash Game Festival
The first ever MPC is being made possible through a unique team-up between the festival’s founder Ivonne Montealegre and another European poker event, the Cash Game Festival (CGF). Montealegre bumped into the MPC concept while she was playing cash games in Los Angeles in January 2019.
Montealegre is a tournament player and her experience in LA gave her an idea of what it feels like to be a cash game professional. Montealegre also experienced the differences between the two formats, especially when it comes to lifestyle and time commitments.
CGF COO Mauritz Altikardes believes the one-of-a-kind collaboration with the MPC will result in a unique and exciting experience for poker players and enthusiasts. The seven-day festival will serve as an avenue for both cash games and tournament professionals to showcase their skills.  It’s like hitting two birds with one stone.
Festival Schedule and Highlights
One thing that makes the MPC really unique is its affordable buy-ins which starting from €30. For just €300, players can compete for the largest event on the schedule, the €15,000-guaranteed Betsson One Bullet which kicks off on May 17, with plenty of satellites spread across the tournament.
The Cash Game Festival is scheduled to take place at 2pm throughout the entire duration of the MPC. Players can also get in on the action at a number of other events, including a €40 Triple Stack Warm-up on May 13, a €170 buy-in Bounty Knockout Championship on May 16, €220 PLO Championship and €120 buy-in Deepstack Championship both taking place on May 18, €150 buy-in Hendon Mob Short Deck, and an €80 buy-in Last Chance Sunday event on May 19.
Montealegre is promising spectacular final tables for the Betsson One Bullet, PLO Championship, Hendon Mob Short Deck and Bounty Knockout events all taking place on May 19.
Amazing VIP Experience
Montealegre guarantees a VIP experience for everyone who comes into the Portomaso Casino. With her long experience of living on the historic archipelago as well as multiple connections, players are in for some crazy treats, including discounts, great food and high-quality customer service. Montealegre has confirmed that she will take charge of a 24/7 concierge desk that will take care of customers’ needs and concerns the moment they enter the casino.
The poker tournament executive, who is also the person behind the Malta Poker Festival, is promising a jaw-dropping festival saying she wants to fight for the players and she will give it her all.
Montealegre is a perfect match for CGF, which has been providing players with unique experiences since 2014. Altikardes said the MPC founder is a charismatic, strong individual with a proven track record in her field. The amazing MPC-CGF partnership, coupled with a breathtaking venue will make the upcoming festival truly an event to remember.
Second Malta Poker Festival To Also Take Place In 2019
Montealegre and her team are also gearing up for the second edition of the Malta Poker Festival which is set to take place from October 30 to November 4, 2019. Montealegre said players can also expect tons of surprises at the festival on which other successful tournaments were built, like The Hendon Mob Championship.
Montealegre has been working with great partners, such as the Amateur Poker Association & Tour, with a new Chinese operator also expressing interest in collaborating with her for an open-face Chinese tournament.
The next few days will be a party for the poker community in Malta and poker players from all over the EU are expected to make their way to Portomaso Casino. If it turns out to be a big success, it is quite possible that we will see another Malta Poker Championships very soon.
