The main event with a £500 buy-in six-max event had a prize pool of £57,000. Jones ricocheted through the player field of 114 to grab the elusive prize. Until recently, the actual success of this Tour was unknown. Recently, a new report by the GUKPT blog suggested that the number of attendees surpassed their expectations, as the numbers had grown several fold over the past few days. The GUKPT blog had mentioned that more than 1,000 players swarmed in to register for the event; a number that left the organizers pleasantly surprised. The event ran from July 16 to 22 at the G Casino in Bolton.
The six-max tournament Jones took part in happened in a different style to the usual ring game set-up that is maintained across the UK and Ireland. The event took place live and it was Jones’ first live title. Over the three days the match lasted, the 114 player-field gradually reduced to the final day’s 36.
At the final table, the first one to be eliminated was Steve Holden. At the sixth place was Mattia Ghera, after which, Jones reigned as the king of the table, knocking out his opponents. The next to be eliminated was Liam Hooks at fifth place, followed by Chris Hughes at fourth and Nigel Booth at third place. Finally, Jones went heads-up against Dave Wearing. At that point, he maintained a 10:1 chip lead against Wearing. In just 15 minutes since the heads-up started, the final hand had come in, with a Q-J going against Jones’ A-J. Wearing was smashed and took his £12,260 and walked away with second-place, while Jenbizzle took the first place and a GUKPT Shoal £500 Survivor prize presented in vouchers, for surpassing the talents of the other players.
The next leg of the tournament to be held at Coventry. The biggie – Goliath tournament is set to run from August 22 to August 27, while the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour £1,000 main event will run from August 25 to August 27.
