The live poker market has been devastated around the world for the last couple of years due to the coronavirus pandemic. Online poker has boomed during this time as live poker operators have taken their tournaments online.
Just as the global poker scene starts to get back to normal, there are reports of more COVID-19 breakouts in the UK and other parts of Europe. The Global Poker Awards were canceled for 2021 but the Global Poker Index (GPI) and The Hendon Mob (THM) are going to be bringing it back in 2022. They just announced that it will be held on February 18 at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas. The GPI is already taking some important steps to ensure that it will be a success.
More Than 20 Awards To Be Handed Out
The award ceremony will be coming back with a bang as there are plans to have more than 20 awards at the 2022 awards ceremony. Some of the awards include several prestigious ones like and 2021 GPI Player of the Year and the hand-selected Poker ICON award. There are also 3 Fans choice awards which include the Player’s Choice for Toughest Opponent and Best Vlogger,
GPI has not announced the full list of the awards yet but there are some expectations that mainstays like Breakout Player of the Year and Journalist of the Year will be picked. Along with the list of awards, GPI will be announcing the voting process. This will likely take place in the early part of 2022 since the awards will be in February. But before that, the awards committee is asking for some feedback from fans.
According to Eric Danis, President of the GPI/THM, the awards are open to suggestions from fans. Instead of the normal candidacy submission, poker fans can send in a recommendation for someone they think is worthy to receive an award by emailing the GPI or getting in touch via Twitter.
Kevin Mathers Signed Up
Besides the announcement of the awards show in 2022, the GPI also recently announced that they signed up a big name to help them out. Kevin Mathers is the newest GPI/THM Poker Information Manager and that has everyone on the team excited.
Mathers is a well-known personality in the poker community. He has one of the biggest poker Twitter accounts and is considered an authority on the game. Players, both professional and amateur, listen to his pronouncements and pay attention. He has been around for more than a decade and is a trusted name.
Danis is very happy to have Mathers on board and says that they have been looking to add him for a long time. As someone that the community trusts, he brings an additional layer of legitimacy to the awards. It will be exciting to see what he will be bringing to the table in 2022.
Will The GPI Awards Take Place In 2022?
The GPI team is positive that they will be able to pull of the GPI Awards show as it only takes place in Feb and will not be a mass gathering. The 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was able to host a successful 6-week poker tournament in Las Vegas and the GPI is confident that it will have no problems with staging the ceremony.
However, it is a little too early to tell as the omicron variant has caused problems in the United States and the number of cases in multiple states is slowly rising. We will have a better idea if the awards ceremony will take place as we get to the end of Jan 2022.
