The regulated online gambling market in the Netherlands will go live from October 1. The Dutch gaming regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has so far given out 10 iGaming licenses and GGPoker is one of the 10 licensed operators.
The ten operators to have received an iGaming license as of now are Betent BV, TOTO Online BV, Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc, FPO Netherlands BV, LiveScore Malta Limited, Holland Casino NV, Bingoal Netherlands BV, NSUS Malta Limited, Tombola Limited and Play North Ltd.
GGPoker To Enter Dutch iPoker Market
GGPoker applied under the NSUS Malta Limited banner and will now be able to officially launch on October 01. GGPoker has established itself in the last couple of years to be one of the premier online poker operators in the world and has knocked PokerStars from the top of the list when it comes to cash game traffic in the U.S poker market.
PokerStars along with a number of other iGaming operators received a letter from the KSA earlier this month asking them to exit the Netherlands before October 1 or face consequences. PokerStars continued to offer online poker services even when the KSA announced that they planned to legalize online gambling in 2021.
While PokerStars continued to offer online poker games, GGPoker pulled out of the Dutch market a couple of years earlier in order to be in a position to apply for an iGaming license and get approved by the KSA.
The KSA has put in place a six-month cooling period that PokerStars and other offshore gaming operators will have to meet. They will have to sit out for six months before applying for an iGaming license in the Netherlands. The cooling-off period in the Netherlands is relatively small compared to Nevada which gave PokerStars a 10 year cooling-off period.
The KSA is expected to take a minimum of 6 months to review and approve online gaming licenses after the cooling-off period. This means that GGPoker is unlikely to face any competition from PokerStars for the next 12 to 18 months.
Competition From Other Poker Rooms
GGPoker is likely to face competition from a number of smaller operators. Holland Casino which is the biggest land based casino in the Netherlands will launch an online offering that will include an online poker skin. Holland Casino is expected to launch online poker games on the iPoker Network.
Holland Casino and Playtech have been partners for a long time and will use the Playtech platform for its online casino and poker games. In a statement, a representative for Holland Casino said “Together with online gaming software company Playtech, a wide range of online games of chance has been developed where Dutch people can go from 1 October for games of chance such as live casino, sports betting, casino slot machines and poker.”
GGPoker is also likely to face competition from Bet365 who could also end up launching online poker services via the iPoker Network although the operator is yet to confirm if it will launch an online poker room in the Netherlands.
KSA Very Strict With Approval Process
KSA had earlier announced that it had received a total of 29 iGaming license applications. Given that the Dutch gambling regulator has only approved 10 so far, it suggests that the KSA is adopting a very strict approval process which is why only one in three applications have been approved.
The KSA has plans on releasing a special gaming guide for Dutch players that will allow them to find out the list of licensed operators and what websites and apps they can play on.
