Dusk Till Dawn, located on the outskirts of Nottingham, is one of the world’s major poker destinations. Launched eight years back, the live poker room has now obtained an excellent reputation. Victoria Coren, the poker champion and broadcaster, had stated in 2010 that Nottingham has the potential to become “the new poker Mecca.”
The owner of Dusk Till Dawn Rob Yong spent several years playing live poker tournaments worldwide before launching Dusk Till Dawn. Relating the tale of how it happened, he said that he had visited a local casino with one of his friends, but wasn’t allowed to play because they were just a minute late. He said: “We were on our way home and on the way we saw the sign on the building – for lease – in this industrial estate and we knew the place well and thought what about this place?”
The friends spent the next four years fighting court cases related to the venue. In the meantime, the bigger casinos in the neighborhood tried their best to discourage them as they did not want any competition.
In November, Dusk Till Dawn hosted the World Poker Tour (WPT) 500, in which players had to pay just £500 to take part, the first event of its kind hosted out of London. Among those who took part were Carl Froch, the boxing star of Nottingham; Mike Sexton, a member of the World Poker Hall of Fame; and Dave Ulliott, the TV player.
On the other hand, the Main Event of the World Poker Tour had a buy-in of £3,000 and attracted players from different parts of the world. The entire festival lasted three weeks, attracting as many as 6,000 poker players.
The atmosphere at Dusk Till Dawn is unique. Simon Trumper, former poker pro and director of Dusk Till Dawn, says that the way the poker room operates and the nature of the game of poker makes the atmosphere different. Trumper said that the venue cares for customers and alerts them whenever they are drinking too much and stops those who were losing more than they ought to.
Nottingham has a large number of poker stars. One of them is Sam Trickett, who won $10 million playing the World Series of Poker (WSOP) One Drop tournament in 2012. At the same time, he has lost incredibly huge amounts in poker tournaments. One of the rooms at Dusk Till Dawn is named in honor of Trickett.
