Michael Phelps, the record breaking athlete who wins Olympic medals the way poker players dream of winning the World Series of Poker Championship bracelets and titles, was recently in the news for winning as much as a 100,000 USD while playing poker.

This win was reported by the celebrity news site TMZ, which claimed that Michael Phelps was not just good at swimming and winning Olympic Gold medals but that he was also a winner of a 100,000 at poker. This tweaked the interest of the poker industry and possibly a few poker rooms that may have been hoping to sign Phelps as a poker ambassador.

TMZ reported that the swimmer, Michael Phelps had been playing poker in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend.  However, a recent tweet by none other than Michael Phelps himself proved that this was all hogwash and that he had not in fact won that amount of money. However, his tweet did not deny that he was playing poker in Vegas. The message on Twitter from Michael Phelps stated, “I wish I won a 100k…. Ha-ha not true tho 🙁 “

The possibility of Michael Phelps winning a 100k would indicate that the athlete has had enough time this year to master a good portion of poker tactics and fine tune his skills; however, Phelps has had a grueling regime of training and such activities to help him compete for the Olympics and it would be quite unlikely that he had time for the pursuit of poker skills in 2012. Phelps has won six medals just at the 2012 London Olympics alone and is highly competitive. Perhaps it is for the best of other poker players that Phelps does not take poker as seriously as he does his swimming.

However, Phelps does like to play poker on occasion and has been known to participate in poker tourneys and win small prizes. He had won $5,213 in a poker game in 2008 which featured a $1,500 buy-in; the swimmer came in at 9th place. Phelps remarked about an earlier win to Card Player: “I love to play, and its fun. It’s exciting. This is a good time for me to learn some things, to pick up a few things in poker, to try to read people and [learn the] mindset that goes into it and everything — just to try something new.”
