Dave Gibson, a member of 888poker’s Stream Team, was the winner of the recently-concluded Chris Eubank Jr. Knockout Challenge which ran during the 888poker LIVE Weekend at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London.
888poker kicked off its 20th-anniversary celebrations this year by signing Eubank Jr. as its newest ambassador back in January. The 32-year-old is a world boxing champion who has won multiple championships in two weight classes.
Over the weekend though, the British professional boxer swapped his gloves for poker chips and took his game from the ring to the poker table in an exciting knockout tournament.
Gibson ended up winning the tournament, but it was Salvatore Sciarotta who took home the biggest cash as he knocked out Eubank Jr early in the final table.
888poker initially hosted an online freeroll tournament for poker players and fans, giving them the chance to win their way into the LIVE knockout challenge featuring Eubank Jr. The qualifiers were joined by other 888poker ambassadors, with £10,000 in total prize pool at stake (excluding Eubank Jr’.s £10K bounty) during the live tournament.
Sciarotta Eliminates Eubank Jr.
The final table began with 30,000 in chips. After a few exchanges at the start of the game, Christaan G moved to the top of the leaderboard while Eubank Jr. slipped down to the bottom of the chip counts.
The British boxing champ would later become the first player to leave the table after falling into the hands of Sciarotta.
The pivotal hand saw Christiaan betting 3,300 and Eubank Jr. moving all in for 7,500, with the flop showing Jd10d4h. Christiaan and Sciarotta called and proceeded to check the 8d turn. Sciarotta ultimately rivered the nut flush to defeat Eubank Jr’s flush, winning the boxer’s massive £10K bounty.
Final Table Results
Eubank Jr.’s elimination left just four players competing for a share of the £10,000 in total prize pool, with Gibson ahead of the pack. He then eliminated Christiaan in 4th place for £1,000, and after that he found himself battling it out in a three-way all in with the rest of the finalists. The tournament could have ended right there had Gibson come out on top, but Sciarotta instead finished off Joao Oliveira for £2,000.
With the stacks even, Gibson and Sciarotta faced each other heads-up. Each scored a double at the start of the match but it was Gibson who closed things out, taking home the £4,000 top prize. That victory gave Gibson his biggest live tournament score so far. Before entering the Knockout Challenge, Gibson’s Hendon Mob profile only showed two tournament cashes which he won in 2017 and 2021.
It was a great experience for Gibson who was supported by a boisterous bunch of friends and other 888poker ambassadors cheering him on throughout the tournament. He managed to battle his way through the final table despite becoming the short stack at some point in the tournament.
Reacting to his win, Gibson said he tried to be just chill while competing and though his supporters were the loudest from the rail, he did not feel that much pressure as he knew they would always be behind him regardless of the results.
The 888poker Stream Team member shared that he was keeping a close eye on Eubank Jr.’s bounty right from the start, but even if he did not end up winning the £10K bounty, he’s still satisfied with his performance.
Meanwhile, Sciarotta, the biggest winner of the day, said it felt absolutely wonderful taking part in a much more exclusive tournament. Making his experience more memorable was the fact that he was the lucky player to claim Eubank Jr.’s huge bounty.
