The closing down of certain prominent US online poker rooms has shocked the American online poker gaming community. These online poker rooms catering to US players were seized by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) because it found their founders guilty of fraud and money laundering. Knowledge of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 is essential to understand this state of affairs better.

The UIGEA does not exactly make online poker in America illegal, but it definitely makes it illegal for financial institutions to process funds related to online poker gaming in the US. The law forced US banks and other financial institutions to refuse business from Internet poker providers accepting US poker players. This made it difficult for US poker websites to move winnings from US poker players’ online gaming accounts to their checking accounts. Full Tilt and PokerStars found a number of ways to get around the UIGEA, and the FBI now alleges that these ways are all illegal.
According to a Manhattan-based US attorney, 11 founders of Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars concocted elaborate fraud, cheating certain US banks and bribing others to assure continuous flow of gambling-related funds. Since these charges are serious, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker recently withdrew their online gaming services from the US when the FBI closed them down. This means that the online poker rooms will function as usual for all non-US poker players under different URLs, but US poker players will no longer be able to play for real money.
However, there are a number of online poker sites that still welcome US poker players to play for real money. Comprehensive lists of US friendly online poker rooms are available at established affiliate sites like ours. These US poker sites offer generous deposit bonuses, lucrative promotions, topnotch online gaming software, and excellent poker tournaments. Since Full Tilt, PokerStars, Absolute, and UB Poker are now no longer available to US poker players, online poker rooms that still accept US poker players will see a sudden rise in traffic.
After the FBI seized the above-mentioned online poker domains, US players were in shock, wondering about the fate of their online poker accounts and the online poker industry in the US. Full Tilt and PokerStars have assured US poker players that their online poker winnings will be transferred to their checking accounts, but that it will take time. Meanwhile, the Internet US poker industry has not come to an end. US poker players can continue to play safe and legal poker at US friendly poker sites.
