Boyd Interactive Gaming, which belongs to Boyd Gaming Corporation, attended a public hearing of the Nevada Gaming Commission held in Las Vegas on Thursday and bagged an online poker license. Boyd is now waiting for its partner Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment Plc to get a Nevada online poker license so that it can launch an online poker business in Nevada.

A year back, Boyd had gotten into a partnership deal with MGM Resorts International and Bwin.party, enabling it to launch online poker services in Nevada on Bwin.party’s online poker gaming software. Boyd informed the Nevada Gaming Commission at the public hearing that it was neither interested in creating proprietary software nor wished to purchase an online poker company. The company had held discussions with 18 companies before deciding to partner with Bwin.party, which it declares to be the “second largest poker network in the world.”

Back in 2006 when the US federal government implemented the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), Party Poker, which had offices in the UK, withdrew from the US online poker market. Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars continued offering real money poker gaming to US players and later got into trouble with the Department of Justice. Since Party Poker withdrew, it does not enjoy the player traffic that PokerStars enjoys, but it is still a brand belonging to Bwin.party Digital Entertainment Plc, which industry analysts say has an important role to play in the online poker industry. Bwin.party is also the owner of the World Poker Tour.

Boyd Gaming Corporation owns a number of casinos in Las Vegas and other US states. A list of its gambling properties would include Gold Coast, Orleans Hotel and Casino, Borgata, and Fremont Hotel and Casino.

Bwin.party applied for online poker licenses in Nevada shortly after MGM Resorts and Boyd Gaming Corporation did the same this winter.

Nevada’s online poker gaming industry is soon expected to expand to other forms of online gambling too. Right now, the industry is intrastate in nature, meant only for the people of Nevada and those who visit Nevada. Boyd has already expressed its interest in offering other forms of online casino gambling too.

Boyd has also declared that Nevada’s intrastate online poker market will generate annual revenue of as much as $180, almost equal to that generated by its live poker industry. Besides, it will generate numerous jobs while giving players a chance to play poker in a regulated environment.
