Former Absolute Poker players who had no hope of recovering their funds will be happy to learn that the U.S Department of Justice (DoJ) has put in place a process for players to file their reimbursement claims with Absolute Poker and has retained the Garden City Group (GCG) to oversee the process in a similar manner that it did for Full Tilt Poker (FTP).
Full Tilt Poker Reimbursement Process Almost Complete
PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker were three of the biggest online poker websites that were forced to shut down operations in the United States after the Black Friday fiasco. Thousands of online poker players who had accounts with these three websites had millions of dollars that needed to be reimbursed and were growing pessimistic with every passing month that their funds would never be returned.
However the DoJ started the Full Tilt Poker reimbursement process back in March 2013 and instructed GCG to be in charge of the reimbursement process. A total of 53,220 claims were filed by former FTP players and affiliates and the GCG approved 44,320 claims till date, paying out a total of more than $118,116,000. There are reports that more than 83 percent of FTP players have been reimbursed and the entire process should be completed shortly.
Absolute Poker Reimbursement Process
Now it’s the turn for former Absolute Poker players to send in their claims and wait for the reimbursement to take place. The GCG sent out emails on April 10 to former Absolute Poker affiliates and players instructing them about the reimbursement process and confirming the last date for submissions as June 9, 2017. Players and affiliates looking for detailed information about the process can go to the official claims reimbursement website which can be found at www.absolutepokerclaims.com
The online poker claims reimbursement process opened from April 10 and players can now file their claims online. Players will be able to see the balance owed to them during the filing process and should they find discrepancies, they can attach proof of documentation and send it in for further review. The website also has a detailed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page that goes into detail about the entire process. The information can be found at http://www.absolutepokerclaims.com/faq#
GCG will look at the player’s last held balance with Absolute Poker and then determine the reimbursement amount formula before finalizing the amount. The reimbursement amount formula for Absolute Poker affiliates will not be the same as that of ex-players and an affiliates final reimbursent amount will be decided based on a different methodology.
The official website states “If the forfeited funds available for distribution equal or exceed the aggregate Account Balances for all eligible Petitioners, each eligible Petitioner with an approved claim will receive the entirety of his or her Account Balance or approved loss amount. If the aggregate Account Balances for all eligible Petitioners exceed the funds available for distribution, payments shall be made to eligible Petitioners on a pro rata basis.”
Absolute Poker Founders Face Music In Court
Although Absolute Poker has exited the U.S market after Black Friday, the online poker website has been in the news. Scott Tom, the founder of Absolute Poker returned to the U.S earlier this year and is facing a number of charges including running an illegal online poker website, conspiracy to breach the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and breaching the UIGEA.
The charges against Tom carry a $250,000 fine along with 5 years in prison for each of the charges. The 31 year old plead not guilty to all of the charges and was released after paying a bond of $500,000. His attorneys are confident that a plea deal will be reached quickly. Brent Beckley, the co-founder of Absolute Poker decided to go down another route by pleading guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Absolute Poker Players Might Have To Wait For Sometime
While the deadline for the submission of claims is fixed for June 9, 2017 there has been no mention as of now as to when the reimbursement process will commence or when will it likely be completed. Based on the FTP reimbursement process, former Absolute Poker players might have to wait for quite a few months before they can expect their reimbursement funds to hit their account.
