The live poker scene in Las Vegas is going to be very busy during the second half of 2021, especially during the fourth quarter of the year as the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) is scheduled to run at the Rio in Las Vegas from 30 Sep to 22 Nov, 2021.
The WSOP live poker tournament which is the biggest and most popular live poker tournament in the world runs at the Rio each year but usually between the months of May and July. The WSOP was forced to cancel the live poker edition in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and was forced to postpone the 2021 edition due to on-going concerns of the pandemic.
2021 WSOP Scheduled For Summer
WSOP tournament organizers are used to pulling off a 6 week mega poker tournament under normal circumstances. There are challenges as always since you get thousands of poker players from around the world showing up and competing in poker events that are taking place around the clock.
Putting together a WSOP live poker schedule in the midst of the pandemic with the potential of more lockdown restrictions should a COVID-19 outbreak occur seemed like a daunting task. Jack Effel who is the VP for the WSOP knows that he and his team have a big job ahead of them to pull off a successful 2021 WSOP.
The first part of that job was putting together a schedule which consists of 88 bracelet events. The bulk (51) of these will be hold’em bracelet events spread between Short Deck, Limit Hold’em and No Limit Hold’em. There will be 13 bracelets given away via Omaha events spread between Omaha Hi-Lo, Pot Limit Omaha and Pot Limit Omaha Hi Lo.
Another 13 will be given away via mixed events such as H.O.R.S.E, 8-Game and Dealer’s Choice. Six more of these WSOP bracelets will be given via Stud events such as Razz, Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud Hi Lo and five bracelets will be given via Draw events such as Triple Draw Mix, 2-7 Triple Draw and 2-7 Single Draw.
Most Players Happy With Schedule
Most live poker players are happy that the 2021 WSOP is taking place even though its towards the end of the year. After missing out on live poker action for over a year, players are happy to get back to the live felts and battle it out at the Rio as it gives them the feeling that life is finally getting back to normal on the live poker circuit.
A Twitter poll was recently carried out by a popular poker player who asked his 30 thousand Twitter followers who are mostly poker fans to vote on whether they loved, hated or did not care about the 2021 WSOP schedule. The results showed that over 54 percent of the votes received were happy with the schedule while a little over 40 percent said they did not really care about the WSOP schedule.
Players have reason to be happy as the WSOP has put together a full schedule that gives low stakes, mid stakes and high stakes poker players a number of events to participate in. There is a great mix of classic WSOP events and also a number of new events that a lot of players are looking forward to.
Some of the popular events that veteran WSOP players will be eager to participate in include the usual $10,000 WSOP Main Event, the $1,500 Millionaire Maker, the $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship, the $100,000 High roller No-Limit Hold’em and the 1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship. One new event that a lot of players are looking forward to is the Reunion event which has $500 buy-in and a $5M guaranteed prize pool.
Some Players Unhappy With Schedule
Only 3.7 percent of the players said they were unhappy with the WSOP schedule. One reason some of these players were unhappy was because the WSOP cut the popular $2,500 Omaha/8 event which received over 400 player registrations during the last two editions.
It just goes to show that you cannot please everyone all the time but the WSOP will be happy that the majority of players are happy with the schedule.
