The first American Poker Awards of its kind was held on the night of Friday in Beverly Hills’ SLS Hotel and attracted a large number of poker players and industry representatives from all over the world. As many as 13 awards were given away at the event, which comprised festivities as well as conferences.
Among the award winners were Daniel Negreanu, the member of Team PokerStars Pro, who won Poker’s Best Ambassador Award; Dan Colman, the Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of Year; Vanessa Selbst, the GPI Female Player of the Year; and Brandon Shack-Harris, who won the Breakout Player of the Year Award.
In addition, the Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on Steve Lipscomb, the founder of the World Poker Tour (WPT); the Industry Person of the Year Award was conferred on Adam Pliska, president of the WPT; the Media Person of the Year Award was conferred on Chris Grove of OnlinePokerReport.com; the Tournament Performance of the Year Award was conferred on Mark Newhouse for his performance in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP); the Media Content of the Year was conferred on Brad Willis for his post “WSOP 2014: Stages/Never Stop Fighting” on PokerStars Blog.
The Event of the Year (with buy-in more than $2000) Award was conferred on the WSOP Main Event; the Event of the Year Award (with buy-in less than $2,000) was conferred on the WSOP Monster Stack; the Charitable Initiative of the Year Award was conferred on the All In for Kids Poker Tournament by WPT Foundation and CHOP; and the Innovation of the Year Award went to Twitch for Live Streaming Poker.
The American Poker Conference, which was held just before the American Poker Awards, comprised a number of panel discussions related to five seminars—Live Poker in a Digital Era, Live and Online Poker: Two Industries in Harmony, The Future of Poker – Live Poker Leaders, Online Poker Snapshot: The Current State of Online Poker in the US; and Players’ Perspective.
Donnie Peters, the editor-in-chief of PokerNews.com, said: “If you’re in any way involved in the poker industry, you must experience the American Poker Conference and the American Poker Awards. Amazing job.”
The GPI, with Alex Dreyfus at its helm, plans to continue working on its goal of sportifying poker at Malta, where the Global Poker Masters will be held. The event will be broadcast on Twitch. On March 25, the European Poker Awards will be held.
