Texas Hold'em Strategy for Beginners
As is the case with most things that involve money and competition, Texas Hold’em takes a lot of hard work and persistence in order to find success. The odds of any player getting anywhere in this game are almost always directly related to how much effort they put in. Yea, that might sound a bit cliché, but it is incredibly true. Basic Hold’em strategy will keep you afloat, but it will not make you rich. Now, if your only goal is to play in home games with your friends, basic strategy is all that you need. On the other hand, if you aspire to play in big cash games in brick and mortar casinos, you are going to need basic Hold’em strategy as a simple framework. Basic strategy is the beginning of what is never ending strategy for Texas Hold’em.
Basic Pre Flop Hold’em Strategy
Basic pre flop strategy is perhaps the most simple aspect of any piece of
poker strategy advice. In a nutshell, players should be looking to play with
strong hands. Don’t waste your time trying to see flops with junk hands. You
will see players on TV doing this, but they generally have a reason that might
not make sense to newer players. When playing in micro stakes or small stakes
games, all that you need to do is select the best of hands to play with. Look
for pocket pairs of all shapes and sizes, big face cards, and even strong
suited connectors. Beyond these types of hands, you shouldn’t need to look
for much else.
Basic Post Flop Hold’em Strategy
Post flop strategy for Hold’em is not all that different than pre flop strategy
when it comes to basic approaches to the game. You should be looking to make
big hands and to play them hard. Don’t try to slowplay hands because you are
afraid of scaring off the other players. This is one of the most fundamental
mistakes that new players make on a regular basis. They figure that bigger
bets or raises will chase away the money that they hope to earn. While this
is often times the outcome of a big bet or raise, it is hardly something to
be scared of. If you wait around and slow play hands, all that you are doing
is giving your opponents a chance to catch up. The only way that you are likely
to get paid off is if the end up making a hand that is just as good as, if
not better than, yours. Of course you could flop the absolute nuts (quads,
for example), but the only way to cash in on hands like this is to either
hope your opponent thinks you are bluffing or to cooler the other players.
Getting paid off is not something that you can exactly master. While getting
the most value out of any given hand is certainly a skill, you can’t help
it when someone else has 6 high. If you have a big hand, bet it out and hope
that the other players have something that you beat but that their hand is
still good enough for them to pay you off.
