Watch Out for WSOP Fraud

Home >Poker News >2007 >May >Watch Out for WSOP Fraud

Date: May 10, 2007
By: Steve

It took a while for anyone to notice, but the World Series of Poker issued a warning in April about a new scam involving WSOP Main Event seats.

Apparently scamsters are offering to sell their $10,000 seat to unsuspecting victims at a major discount, sometimes as much as 60% of face value. The thieves say that they are unable to play in the tournament and need to get rid of the seat. The propositions typically come over e-mail or instant message.

The World Series of Poker has advised potential Main Event participants that these offers are not legitimate. Pre-registered seats are not transferable. They are refundable, however, which makes these fraudulent offers non-sensical. Nobody in their right mind would sell their seat at a discount when they can just get their money back directly from the World Series.
