PartyPoker Changes Play Money Policy
By Kory Travers | February 3, 2010
Their chips may not have monetary value, but many recreational players feel as if they’ve been robbed by the site they’ve logged countless hours on over the years. A recent change to PartyPoker’s play money policy limiting the number of chips a player can retain in their account resulted in a number of players having literally millions of chips confiscated with little warning.
When players open an account with PartyPoker they are automatically given 1,000 play money chips. Should they lose those chips, they are credited with a fresh 1,000, but can only receive up to 3,000 play money chips in a given 24-hour period. Some players have taken their starting thousand chips and worked their account up into the hundreds of millions. The new policy restricts players to possessing only a maximum of 250,000 play money chips in their PartyPoker play money accounts. The decision came after the site discovered that players were dumping millions of chips at the play tables in violation of the site’s terms of service agreement. Despite having no real life monetary value, some outside sites were earning a small profit by selling off the play chips to interested parties.
In a February 2nd post on the PartyPoker Blog, the site released an official statement on the matter. “This decision has the vast majority of our play money players in mind, and is intended to stop the transferring of chips from account-to-account outside of regular hands of poker,” the blog read. “This decision has the vast majority of our play money players in mind, and is intended to stop the transferring of chips from account-to-account outside of regular hands of poker.”
Some players who had hundreds of millions of play money chips have seen their resources dry up as a result of the decision and, as the blog indicates, they are left with no form of recourse. However, PartyPoker is trying to offer some consolation to those affected by the change by offering a special freeroll for play money customers. The site will put up $1,000 in prize money and will also give away a trip to see the fourth installment of the PartyPoker Premier League film in Las Vegas, Nevada later this month. The Premier League will feature a line-up of top poker pros including Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, newly added Team PartyPoker Pro Tony G, Vanessa Rousso and reigning Premier League Champion, JC Tran.
While the freeroll is a nice gesture, feedback from the play money players is that they would rather have their chips back. Now that their accounts have been dialed back to 250,000 points, if they sit down and play a winning session, the points just disappear and are not credited to their accounts.
