Party Poker Womens World Open II Set for Wednesday
By Adam Ulick | December 9, 2008
The Party Poker Women’s World Open II starts on December 10th and will be an international affair. 36 of the world’s top female poker players have already paid the $3,000 buy-in and will make the trip to London, England. The overall prize pool will be $108,000 and the winner will take home $50,000 of it.
Some of the big names who will be in the Women’s World Open II include Erica Schoenberg, Xuyen “Bad Girl” Pham, Jen Mason, European Ladies champion Jackie Meecham, May Macerias, Katharine Hartree, Shelley Rubenstein, Stafanie Bergener, Christine Klecz, Party Poker World Open champion Pippa Flanders, and the returning Party Poker Women’s World Open champ Bev Pace.
Bev Pace, who is the wife of the famous poker player/comedian Norman Pace, was widely unknown as a poker player until she won the inaugural Women’s World Open. She overcame immense poker odds and a stacked field which included last year’s favorite Liz Lieu, Deborah Rogers, Kara Scott, Xuyen Pham, and actresses Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Tilly.
Pace was able to defeat Jen Mason in the heads-up finals and pocketed $50,000 for the win. The finals saw the two go back and forth for hours with both women winning a number of poker hands. Then Mason decided to go all-in with A-J only to be called by Pace and her pocket 6s; Mason got no help from the board and Pace won the Women’s World Open.
After winning the Party Poker Women’s World Open title, Pace stuck up for women-only tournaments by saying, “Women’s tournaments are good for getting more ladies interested in poker. The standard is no different to a mixed sex game but they do encourage some to come forward who wouldn’t do (so) otherwise.”
This year’s Women’s World Open is supposed to be broadcasted on the UK’s Matchroom Sport channel. Eddie Hearn, who is Matchroom Sport’s Director of Events, is very excited about this poker tournament and said, “The PartyPoker.com Women’s World Open was a big hit last year and we’re delighted to see it coming back. It is one of the most popular events in the eyes of international broadcasters.”
Here are the results from last year’s Party Poker Women’s World Open:
1st place: Bev Pace (UK) $50,000
2nd place: Jen Mason (UK) $22,000
3rd place: Maria Demetriou (UK) $14,000
4th place: Bronwyn Campbell (CANADA) $10,000
5th place: Jackie Vaswani (UK) $7,000
