Party Poker Looks Skyward for Latest Event
By Kevin Felix | September 5, 2009
The latest live poker event sponsored by Party Poker definitely has a gimmick that will certainly set it apart as the live tournament circuit revs back into high gear. The online poker site announced last week that it would be partnering with Ace Magazine to host Poker in the Sky, a poker tournament held 150 feet in the air over downtown Copenhagen.
The event is set to take place on Friday September 11th in Copenhagen, Denmark where 22 brave poker players will be hoisted up on a platform above the Town Hall. Party Poker held a number of online satellites to the unique event and the 20 qualifiers will have to contend with both the height and two celebrity participants. The satellites were limited only to Party Poker users who live in Denmark. The identities of the celebrity players have not been revealed at this time, but Party Poker is expected to release more specifics about the tournament as the sky-bound event draws nearer, including the format for the event and whether or not it will be televised.
The platform will hold all 22 participants and a crane will lift it above the Town Hall for the duration of the event, which is scheduled to last for four hours. There is no explanation as to how players will get down once they have been eliminated or choose to quit. The player who is able to conquer both their fear of heights and their opponents will win themselves an entry into the upcoming World Open V event sponsored by Party Poker.
The World Open V will take place next month in London, England and will be televised and broadcast on the popular British network, Five. A number of big name poker pros are scheduled to play including Jennifer Tilly, Phil Laak, World Poker Tour host Mike Sexton, Steve Sung, JC Tran and Tom “durrrr” Dwan. The winner of Poker in the Sky will receive a buy-in into the $10,000 event as well as luxury hotel accommodations and airfare.
In a press release from Party Poker, a spokesperson described some of the appeal of the unique Poker in the Sky event. “Poker is a high octane game and we want to give the Danish poker players a special experience that will really boost their adrenaline levels”, explained the representative. “We have an expectation that it will be the most spectacular poker event Copenhagen has ever seen.”
