This July, Party Poker is making online poker history.  They are giving away a record breaking $12 million in prize pools guarnateed, starting from a $1 rebuy to a $530 NL Freezout.  You can check it at Party Poker’s website under what they call the “$12 Million All Tournaments Guaranteed”; they are guaranteeing that even if 5 people sit at the table to play a $300,000 tournament, they’ll share the $300,000 prize pool.  That is what is interesting of these tournaments; most cardroom managers will close a tournament if the needed amount of players to cover the prize pool is not registered.  Such premise is generally listed under the terms and conditions section, and most players often get disappointed from waiting (even hours) for a tournament to start and having it canceled because it is not populated. 

A guaranteed online poker tournament is one where the prize pool is guaranteed by the poker room.  For example a guaranteed $10,000 tournament will always have a minimum of $10,000 in prize pool.  If not enough players join to cover the prize pool, the poker room covers the remaining amount this is called an overlay.  If, on the contrary, more than enough players enter the tournament, their buy-in will be added on top of the guaranteed amount.  This is what makes online poker guaranteed tournaments so attractive.
