So, I'm really curious as to how many forum members are making a serious attempt to get into a WSOP event this year? Via online satellites or direct buy-in events. Anyone?
I don't play many satellites to anything, but I did jump into a WSOP satellite the other day and narrowly missed a $500 entry ticket to the main event qualifier. I did finish in 5th for the only money spot though, so it wasn't a complete loss.

My general theory on that is:
Winning a WSOP seat is exactly the same thing as winning $12k in some kind of tourney, with the exception that $12k is actually worth something to me, whereas the WSOP seat is just worth a happy memory unless I actually cash in it.
I'd love to be the youngest ever winner this year, but I can't really justify "gambling" with $10k in that large of a field when I could just take the $10k and keep it. $10k is about twice my current net worth.
That said, I'll probably wind up doing the 300 raked hands/week on Interpoker to try to get in that 32 player satellite - if it's free and doesn't take THAT much effort, why the hell not?

Cashing in the main event isn't exactly a long shot. It's probably the easiest poker tournament in the world to finish in the money in. That being said, I'd also prefer the $12k. I wouldn't rule out ever going, but I really have no desire to right now.

I figure this year will have upwards of about 6,500 entries and the best poker players in the world in it. How is that easy?

Well yeah, but ~650 of those spots are gonna make the money, and most of those players are probably donkeys. Especially given that the WSOP structure favors talent over luck, I don't doubt that the ME is one of the easier events to cash in.

Seriously? That's awesome. If you're a strong STT player, you might consider doing the one table satellites also. Before anyone chimes in, yes, I know the strategy is different...
I'm getting excited about the prospect of having potentially several forum members in the main event. I'm going to be there for the last week, so we'll meet up again, hopefully for your final table appearance. I'll be the guy shouting some slogan every time you win a pot...

Thanks for the compliment, but I am in no way ready to compete at that level. I'd like to think that one of my better attributes as a player is that I don't have a deluded sense of my own skill. Yes, I know the fields are filled with lots of donkeys that I could beat with my eyes closed, but there are still too many professionals that could do the exact same thing to me, many more than just the "name players" that we recognize.
Then there's the issue of bankroll. I can't afford the $10,000 buy-in, nor can I afford the $1000 satellites, though I am confident enough in my STT skill to believe that I could win a seat that way.
I don't think that anyone here on the forum knows me for my incredible prowess at MTT's... I'm like one of the only ones here who has no MTT win bigger than like um... a 5 table tournament. Peanuts, baby. I'm such an STT monkey. Even the errors that I make in MTTs are because my mindset is so geared to STT's, which is often a point of laughter between Jen and me. I don't have the patience for mid length MTT's as it is, so can you imagine what kind of mess I'd be in for a marathon event like the main event? I'd never make it. I'm in pretty good physical shape, but I don't think people realize what kind of fucked up endurance level you need for an event that big. I mean, you wouldn't think of showing up for the LA marathon after only running 7 miles a day, would you?

My best first ever was a 3-table, and my best finish ever was like 40th in a 1000 player field...never made an FT in a large field. So, I feel your pain.
