I would suspect either AJ, KQs, AT, or similar.
AK would have raised more, as well as JJ/TT. He could have QQ+ and was trying to trap and if so is getting good extraction.
I would probably fold here as I would expect another pot sized bet to come on the river. His smooth call on the flop is a bit disconcerting as it either means he missed his A or he has a monster. I would err on the side of caution unless you beleive that you will gain useful information down the line by calling him down or raising him.
I believe a raise or fold are your only options; you are way behind or way ahead. I would still fold - wait until winning is easier.

I'm not particularly fond of the bet on the turn b/c this is the first orbit, you have no reads and no info on anyone. Therefore, you don't know what he could be raising (is he tight, loose, maniac, etc) and his flat call on the flop tells you nothing b/c you haven't defined him as a player. Could he hold A9 or 66, you're not sure (or God forbid, 22), that's the problem.
I don't think he had 22 b/c this hand would have been posted in the Bitch zone
.
I agree with LSU, you're either way ahead or way behind. It's going to cost you big to find out. With this in mind, I check behind on the turn.

I folded, he showed 44. He turned out to be pretty LAGgy when I got some stats on him later.

Bet more on flop - as played, flop bet looks weak and this may be why he made such a wierd play on the turn. I would then continue with a 1/2 - 2/3 pot bet on turn followed by a check on the river. Don't check turn because you don't know where you are on the river.
As played, I'd call the turn, even though I'd probably fold to a large bet on the river. This is not a scary flop and villain may think his hand is good, whatever it is. I think you see a strong Ax here enough to make a call profitable. If he actually has a monster, he will be a lot on the river. I think with a weaker holding he will check and hope to win the showdown.
