Someone tell me why I should play Limit poker
« on: Apr 13th, 2005, 12:34am »
I have never really been a fan of limit poker, but I am thinking about getting into it more. Can someone give me advantages/disadvantages of limit vs. NL
heres some ideas:
advantages of limit:
- less variance than NL
- straightforward.. can follow a "if A, then do B" method
- pot odds can be applied easily
disadvantages of limit:
- harder to bluff
- can't win as much money from a fish in a given hand
- less fish in general?
- Poker

Go spend ten minutes playing .02/.04 or .05/.10 on Stars and tell me there are less fish.
...okay, that's an extreme example, but trust me, there are TONS of awful players (at least on Party .5/1) out there. Occasionally you'll get a tight table, but that's why I have GameTime+ around to tell me so I can move my ass somewhere else.
I've never felt like I've been playing against a bot, and even if I am, so what? They have some program telling them if they have pot odds to chase their flush draw, but until the third suited card hits I'm still throwing as much money as possible at my TPTK.
Less variance = DEFINITELY true. My worst PL sessions make my worst limit sessions look fantastic in comparison, and despite that I've still had 50BB sessions on occasion playing limit. This is probably the biggest reason I play limit more than NL or PL - I don't like the fact that someone can put me all-in at any time, and I have to make an educated gamble with my entire buy-in (because come on, how often do you get raised with the absolute nuts?). If you feel comfortable with your NL skills (I don't), and can handle the beats and bad decisions (I can't), then maybe you shouldn't play limit since you can probably make more money at NL.

Variance is the key for me. Generally when I have a losing session it's not alot. I started two months ago mixing .25/.5 into my SNGs. I wasn't doing very well at SNGs but I was making back what I lost playing limit. Last month I moved up to .5/1 and again had a winning month, not life altering riches but a decent profit. This month I have gone to 1/2 and I am maintaining a 6BB/100 win rate and winning over 70% of my sessions. So again its a nice little income. My SNG numbers have been much better so I am having a decent month. If my success continues this month I will probably try 2/4 next month. If you play smart you will probably make a little money. I'm guessing the fish will decrease as I go up in limit, but they are still plentiful at 1/2. I am blown away at times, because it seems some players just love giving away their money. Not to say I don't occasionally have a fish moment, but when I do it's not so devastating in limit as it would be in NL.
I tried NL a couple times and got ownt, I would get a hand where my opponent could only win if he had a certain two cards and sure enough they always seem to have them. I just couldn't handle it. NL tourneys I can deal with but the ring games are not for me.

Seems like a lot of people on this site are scared of NL ring games Tongue
Try playing the $1 - $2 ($2 BB) NL tables in AC... pretty intimidating at first.... but very fun. The first table I sat at was FULL of fish. Second table... not so much.

I wouldn't use the term "scared". If someone prefers not having to make certain decisions for real money, since some of our bankrolls are not that hefty, that doesn't make them "scared", rather, SMART Grin. Notice that I am not one of the smart ones Tongue.

Actually, I think one of the most profitable things about the NL ring games is that a lot of the players ARE scared. If you put a guy on a hand that he's not sure about, you can usually make a big raise and steal it, cause he's looking at that $3 or $5 and thinking, "that's a meal at McDonald's right there, and it's only the turn."
Now, if they have top pair, or even a pair of face cards, they'll call you down to the river and call all-in. You just have to be careful and pick your spots.
NL requires tightening up your starting requirements, then rethinking and tightening up more, then tightening until you requirements are as tight as a duck's ass.
...and playing position. Wink

There is probably an interesting story behind knowing how tight a duck's ass is, but please don't tell us. Wink

It's just a question of biology and necessity. A duck's ass is constantly underwater, so it has to be water tight.
And you thought I was molesting ducks... sheesh....
How did you find out, anyway?
