Scotty donks it up with sub-premium hands
by scotty1139 » Thu Mar 30, 2006 12:47 am
Scottie G. wrote:Q: Scotty, do you play anything other than JJ-AA? Every hand I've seen you post you have premium cards.
A: Nope. I'm a weak-tight rock. You should steal my blinds. Often. I spend my days patiently waiting for AA and KK. In fact, as recommended by my idol, Phil Hellmuth, I only play the top 10 hands...
Except for this:

Really, it seems pretty standard to me. In other words, I don't see how I might play any hand differently.
might be able to find a fold or two in there, if you look real close

I just rattled these off quickly. I didn't bother to give any info on my opponents and their #'s. Without that kind of info, some of the plays I make will seem like sheer idiocy/insanity. Sometimes they look like that even when I do give the info....

OK, this is more for merv's sake, since scotty has information that we don't have when looking at these hands and thus what I say might be off for him. However, given that me and merv are looking at the same hands, this is what I see as non-standard:
Hand 1 (JTs): Flopping a gutshot to the nuts plus a flush draw = OMG BET THIS. The preflop raiser already checked to you, buy yourself a free card if you can, or maybe even take it down there.
Hand 3 (85s): Punish that min-raise on the flop; a PSR would be to about $7-8 there, not $5. $5 ($3 more for him to call) is basically saying "please call me" and complicates play on future streets since you're OOP and still drawing; give him a chance to fold, but if he's gonna stick around, make him pay.
Hand 4 (ATo): OH MY GOD SPEWAGE. This is just terrible absent reads.

For hands 1 & 3, you're absolutely right on. I highly regret not betting the first, and yes, my raise in #3 was too little. Also in hand #1, I don't regret betting the river, but I do think I could've bet more like $11-12 to accomplish the same bluff. The raiser was tight, but showed a nice ability to lay down several hands on the river (was in my notes)
For hand #4, the villain had these stats over 58 hands:
VPiP 92%
PFR 40%
WSD 48%
W$SD 21%
My notes on him basically say what we already know: huge maniac, doesn't fold, but my notes say that top pair is good, that he not only bets and trains ace high to the river, he pays it off too! He was Mr. Johnny overplay with second pair in several instances, and ended up rivering 2 pair on a few, otherwise his W$SD would've been even lower. I obviously felt that my read was correct, otherwise I wouldn't have put my whole stack in there. Turns out I was terribly wrong.

I figured you'd have a good reason for #4, but I was worried that merv didn't look at that and have red flags go up everywhere without knowing what that reason is.
Faq, post something, I'll be happy to tear it to shreds.
