Ok. A bit of an update/reply:
Hooverphonic was a great match, I picked up both "The Magnificent Tree" and "Blue Wonder Power Milk." Gold Star to MJ. I also bought Muse: Absolution. I could only find 2 songs from Dusted, but I like what I heard, so I'd be interested in more from them.
Bands I've sampled that are not exactly buzzing my tower:
Lamb
Way Out West
Mandalay
Thievery Corporation
Esthero
Zero 7
Kruder and Dorfmeister
Blue Six
Faithless
Craig Armstrong
If I didn't like it, it was usually because of the downtempo, or the imbalance of vocal/music. Also, I didn't care for any of the techno offerings, that's not my thing, sorry. I'm not passing judgement on anyone's taste in music or on the quality of the musicians, in fact, I appreciate all the referrals.
Scottie G. and Goofyballer:
I'm sorry to say that I didn't care for the bands that you had listed. I still like alternative rock, but I'm gradually moving away from that genre. Coldplay's first 2 albums I have, but I wasn't excited about their last offering.
Miamipuck:
I've got all the Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc... as well as all the bands that sounded like them in the 90's.
Another note for recommendations:
I have a musical bias for the female voice. I'm much more open to different kinds of music if they come with a fantastic vocalist. I still like guitars and rock music, but I'll take Beth Gibbons over some douchebag with a distortion pedal any day.

I have very wide tastes, so some of this may not be for everyone. But it's stuff I've listened to for about the last two months (or longer):
Artist/Album(s)
Rock:
The Futureheads, self-titled (my favorite album of 2004)
The Randies, At the Friendship Motor Inn (kind of like the Go-Gos, but edgier)
Eagles of Death Metal, Peace Love Death Metal (Side project for Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. This is a REALLY great album, and it's not really metal, btw)
Spoon, Gimmie Fiction (they're starting to get some commercial play)
The Cribs, (self-titled)
Soul Coughing, Ruby Vroom! (or) Irresitable Bliss (my favorite band of 1990's)
Electronic:
The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Pushin On (soulful electronica)
Subtle, A New White (out there, experimental hip hop)
Mouse on Mars, Radical Connector (I REALLY like this album)
Nostalgia 77, The Garden (edgier, jazz influenced electronica. My girlfriend doesn't "get" this, but I like it)
The Real Tuesday Weld, I Lucifer (mellower, folkier electronica)
The Streets, A Grand Don't Come for Free (hip-hop influence brit-pop, not really rock, though)
Caribou, The Milk of Human Kindness (ambient, mellower electronica, but well done)
A good number, if not all, of these albums are available via iTunes, so you can preview them if nothing else.
I highly recommend http://www.allmusic.com as a resource, as they are excellent at listing similar artists, influences, etc, to groups/artists you may already like.

Scotty,
Alice in Chains was far and away my favorite out of the Seatle bands. They were awesome. Saw them in concert with Van Hagar.
Yeah I have a bias towards women too.
If you have a bias towards females, the voice that is, I am positive you have the Pretenders downloaded. Chrissie Hyndes is fantastic. She is without a shadow of doubt my favorite female singer.
Also, you might like Rush, Geddy Lee has a somewhat feminine voice. For a 3 man band they are also fantastic in concert. They are certainly better then 99% of the popular concert bands around today.

If you like this, you should really get some XTC (like Black Sea, Drums and Wires, English Settlement, or Skylarking), one of my favorite bands and maybe the greatest pop band of all time (or maybe that's the Beatles, but XTC are more of a more modern Beatles than anyone else could be). The Futureheads sound a LOT like this band and have even admitted being highly influenced by them. There's also Devo's debut album which of course is great and also influenced the band ("Robot" could easily be a Devo song).
I like a lot of techno music (I've especially gotten into the Orb lately, great music), and a lot of progressive rock (like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, and so on...), but really, some good ol' fashioned New Wave like the Police, Talking Heads, and all those bands above is sometimes just the best kind of music there is...

Yeah, I definately hear the XTC influence. I think The Futureheads have a little more post-punk sound to them. Incidentally, The Futureheads have a new sigle out that sound much more XTC-ish than their debut album.
Also recommended is Hot Hot Heat.
I also found a couple of tracks by Dogs Die in Hot Cars - again, using AllMusic as my reference - that have a similar sound, but they are not nearly as polished as Futureheads, XTC, Hot Hot Heat....
I think I've officially exceeded my "pretentious quotient" for the day.

Actually, I remember hearing Dogs Die in Hot Cars on the radio, that Randy Newman song, and got the album. You can tell it's also very XTC influenced. Futureheads would be like the early band (Black Sea and before) and Dogs would be the later band (English Settlement on up).

Another gold star to MJ. He sent me the single, "6 Underground" by the Sneaker Pimps, and so I tracked down all the songs from the rest of the album "Becoming X" and now I'm raving about them. More of that, please
