Trip report - a little maniac 10-20
by bl » Mon May 07, 2007 11:53 am
So I was able to get down to Foxwoods Saturday night and as an added bonus they showed the fight in the poker room. Not bad.
I shot down after putting the kid to bed and got there around 9:45. To my surprise there was open seating at almost every game/level. Must have been due to the fight. I decided on the 10-20 limit game and although I recognized 3-4 of the players I decided that if it was a bad table I’d try to find a soft NL table. As it turns out there were 3 guys who are regular 20-40 players who couldn’t get a seat as they were only running 1 20-40 table. 2 more were regular 10-20er’s and 3 I pegged as complete donks. Two of the donks got in a heated discussion about 2 orbits after I sat about whether or not a third 9 would have made A9 a winner over 77 on a board of 9734. aaaalllllrighty then.
The one 10-20 regular who was sitting on about 1,500 and was licking his chops trying to bust the donks. He was in the 3 seat. He’s a very good, tricky, aggressive player. The other regular is an older gentlemen who is a rock but pushes very hard with the goods. Classic TAG who somehow gets paid off. Honestly anyone with half a clue would NEVER call a turn or river bet from this guy.
Now you’d think the 20-40 guys would be big fav’s in this game but they weren’t. Actually to the contrary. They kept trying to bluff the fish (who would call you down with almost anything) and they called waaay too many bets by the good players when it was obvious they were beat. One thing there were though was aggressive. When I say aggressive I mean UBER aggressive. The problem was that they were trying to isolate the fish but we all knew how light they were raising so the rest of the table was jumping in with almost anything. It wasn’t uncommon to have 4-5 in on a flop for 3 bets. Needless to say there were some sick, sick hands at showdown (and we almost ALWAYS got to showdown)
First hour: I buy in for 600 and I obviously don’t play much for 3-4 bets preflop so I saw 3 flops total early on and all three were from the blind. I missed each time and was down probably $40 when I finally get JJ on the button. Since there was a live straddle I made it 3 bets and got 4 callers. Flop was KJ8 rainbow. One of the fish leads into me and I raise. ALL THREE CALL. Turn is an 8, two clubs. Checked to me and I bet. Two reluctant folds (the donks) but a solid player calls me. I’m not worried about KK (he would have capped preflop) so basically I have the nuts unless he has quads. River completes the flush. He checks, I bet, and he raises. I think for awhile, three bet and he instantly knows I’m full. He pays me off and I score a huge pot.
Hour 2: I go on a bit of a dry spell in here and unfortunately I take a few shots with some suited connectors to lose 150 or so. The draw odds were sooooo good due to all the action that I just couldn’t help jumping in there and in retrospect I was playing correctly. The one hand I got in trouble with came at the end of the hour. 4 limp in so I obviously raise my button with 87s. The big blind 3 bets it (one of the donks who was 3 betting with hands like KT) one other caller so I just call. Flop is QQ7 and he leads out. My plan is to float the flop and raise the turn if it’s a rag. I call and we see a 5s heads up. I now have a 4 flush and possibly the best hand. He again leads out and I raise him. He quickly 3 bets. FACK!! I call and fold when an Ace hits. Luckily the Ace didn’t make my flush because he flashed AQ.
That pot hurt a lot.
Hour 3: This is where it got interesting. We got down to 7 handed and believe it or not it got MORE aggressive. I’d say half the hands got capped preflop and at least 3 players would see the flop. I had AJs twice and paid dearly to see crappy flops (I flopped a gut shot once and paid one more bet). Despite this I managed to win two pots by pulling hands out of my but. I raised my button with T7s, got 2 callers, flopped JT7 and turned a T. Didn’t get river paid though. Another hand I raised with 86s and the same donk from the AQ hand 3 bet me again. F’er. I called and the flop came Q84 all clubs. He bet, I call and the turn is an 8. Sweet. He leads again, I raise again, he 3 bets again. Please god don’t let him have QQ. River is a 4 and he checks. His check was one of, “I have a AQ please check”, so I bet of course. He moaned and groaned and called with K7of clubs for the flopped flush. I proudly tabled my 86.
As you can see I didn’t get much in the way of cards. AA-99 never. AJ twice and the rest were the crappy suited connectors. I did have 55 once and folded after a scary flop. Too bad a 5 showed up on the river and I would have had a set over set situation against the other huge fish. Do’h!
Hour 4: it’s getting late and I’m thinking about leaving. I’m about even after some big swings. High point was after my JJ hand and low point was probably 300. I pick up QQ finally and of course get 3 bets in with 3 callers. Flop is AQ7 all hearts. I bet, get raised by donkey, and I three bet it. There’s a caller along for the ride. Turn is T of hearts. WTF. I call a turn bet and we check down the river. Guy shows KT with the King of hearts for the nuts. The caller had Ax. Thanks for not betting the nuts mister DONK.
THE VERY NEXT HAND I get QQ again and quickly raise. It looks like a steam raise so 4 callers and flop is QJ9. You have to be kidding. I bet get called twice and turn King. Can someone pair a board ONE TIME. checked around (I had to) and river T. checked again and we all chop. My QQ vs. 94 and J7. Any Jack or 9 and I’m taking one of them to value town. GRRRR.
Probably 20 minutes later I’m thinking about leaving. We’re now down to 5 handed and I finally get AA. I raise and get 3 bet by my donkey buddy (third time he’s 3 bet me). Flop is 855 rainbow, he bets and I smooth call. Turn is an Ace. He now checks.
I can’t really not bet here can I? Ehhh, I bet, he calls one more and folds the river. Says he had 99. whatever. I count them up and after the roller coaster ride I’m up $100. lol.
Compared to a NL game this was lots of fun. After watching the 20-40 players I felt like I had a pretty good edge because it was very obvious to me what they were doing. Reading players in NL is tougher IMO because they could have such big ranges. The good players will confuse you and make your mistakes even costlier. At limit I can usually narrow down the range drastically once I see a turn and that’s where you can make your money. As long as you’re getting money in good pre-flop you should be able to kill these games.
Anyway that was it. I drove home VERY tired and my wife let me sleep in. That was heaven…..

BTW: Who won the fight?
Mayfield by split decision
De La Hoya put more effort and energy in but he couldn't land his punches.

Just out of curiousity, what made it 'more fun'. I always like different perspectives on LHE.

NL is usually pretty slow going then all of a sudden you have this huge decision to make. In a loosy goosy limit game you can play lots more hands and actually feel like you have control over how far you go with it.
I hate playing NL when I run into a set over set and just have to say "that's just how it goes, I'm supposed to get stacked there". In Limit a donkey has to catch a LOT of coolers and suckouts to bust me and he's usually paying me back with interest in between.

I enjoy 20/40 limit, but as you know, we play a mix game including Omaha hi/lo, stud hi lo and badugi.
To be honest, HE receives the least action. It's not very loose, but sometimes things can get very interesting. It's very basic for the most part and most of the money I win comes from Omaha and Badugi and not coincidentally, most of the money I lose comes from missing in Omaha and badugi.
I play a very very tight game and the guys know that. Also, a couple guys are insanely sticky and will call down anything. Since the guys are all good friends, the majority of the time, they're talking about prop bets (outside of the game). I usually just sit and listen and concentrate on playing well (as this has become my primary means for making money playing poker.

The badugi game is wild, very wild. You have a couple of guys who love to draw to anything, so the action is always heavy. Also, we usually play anywhere from 7-9 handed, so when the dealer runs out of cards, he'll mix up all the mucked cards and shuffle those, to continue dealing. This usually happens on the third draw.
I love badugi.

This is my feeling after playing NL for just one weekend live. I don't count my live poker towards my bankroll (it's money I can afford to lose, if it comes to that). I like that I can play limit for a long time and not have to rebuy.
My next trip up to Niagara, I'm unsure what I'm going to end up playing.
