If anyone sees Lee Jones ...
by caffiend » Thu May 03, 2007 3:49 am
If anyone sees Lee Jones tell him I said he should rearrange things so every other limit is six max. I suppose that might dry up some limits, but it's a chance I'm willing to take.

Mainly because I was relatively pissed off about playing Omaha there the other day. It's pot-limit, so naturally anyone over the max buy-in isn't going to give up their seat. Of course, I have the guy who plays one hand every fifteen minutes or so, then sits out while he does some more work. Welcome to five max.
Oh right, you've got one chair with the short stacker(s) in it. You know, so they can go busto and be replaced three minutes later with another dope. Problem is, for those three minutes it's now four max. Fucking joy, four handed. Now I can play 50% of my hands out of the blinds.
To be fair, I suspect it's much more of an issue in pot-limit than no-limit games because position's more important in them. But I was talking about every game. Morons will generally flock to games that are particuarly bad for them (witness, any modern table game) while neglecting better structures. Unfortunately, in poker you often have to follow the herd to find a game. Because of that, I don't think spreading everything is the way to go.
Some rooms, for example, spread one or two limits of Hold'em with a kill. The usual custom seems to be to spread the second and maybe third limit that way. It makes sense, because the lowest limit offered rarely needs loosening up while the other games below middle limits do. But, it also affords people who like or dislike kill pots the option to opt out of them while still finding a good game.
If I can offer up a couple of examples I'm not too sure about, I think Foxwoods has a kill at 5/10 tables. So people who dislike kills would play 4/8 or 10/20 instead. Granted, 10/20 is a stretch, but 4/8 isn't really a much smaller game than 5/10. Similarly, MGM Grand apparantly offers 3/6 and 4/8 with a kill, but I don't know if they spread it without. Either way, 2/4 and 5/10 are reasonable alternatives to those.
The same thing could be said about six max. If it was every other level you'd be able to maintain games of both sizes. Better yet, from my point of view, people who want to play both would have the option to find healthy games. Ebony and ivory, live together in perfect harmony...
