Laptop Help

Thinking of getting a laptop for 'downstairs' to replace the old Win98 desktop. Looking at the Sunday ads, any issues with the following?
Toshiba Satellite Notebook with Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2060
Gateway Notebook with AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50
The Gateway is $699 (on sale at Best Buy...I haven't shopped around online yet). I didn't really want to spend more than $600, but I heard Vista Basic isn't really worth it and you should get Home Premium is you can. Is that true? This is mainly for the GF and will be used mainly for Internet and email. Maybe for playing poker. Can I find a laptop with XP for cheaper?
Anything I should know about? I'm so out of touch with PCs, I don't know what's good anymore. I know I want it to record DVDs & CDs. I'm not opposed to buying it online. What are some good online stores?
Thanks in advance.

My favorite on line store for computer parts has been newegg.com for quite some time now. Pretty good prices and real good about exchanges and the like. Never bought a laptop from them though. Usually stuff like processors, power supplies, motherboards etc. They sell about everything though.

I can't say enough good things about newegg, but I don't know if they sell laptops.
Or, you could go here.

Dunno if this helps, but I am considering having teh poker buy me this Toshiba Sattelite http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pde ... oid=365595
I want to be able to 4 table on it, but I don't quite know how the 1440 x 900 resolution will like that. I think it might be ok.
I saw a lesser version in a store and the display was really nice. It seems to be a good compromise between a regular laptop and a gaming one. The hard drive was a little quicker than the one in the store and the graphix card on this one has 512 instead of 256, however this one on Toshiba Direct is cheaper by $100.
My first laptop was a Toshiba. And when I say first, I mean that it had a grey lcd screen and possibly 640k memory, which according to Bill Gates should be enough for anybody. I remember being pissed because the salesman said it was an XT, but it was in fact just a PC. It still works. 3 years ago I purchased a Toshiba Protege tablet PC and it still works, even though I spilled hot ramen all over it. The screen doesn't respond so well to the pen anymore though. We use it for our "hotel" computer. So, all in all I'm pretty comfortable with Toshiba. In fact, I've had more problems with my Alienware. I'd stay away from Gateway.

Yeah, thinking I'm going with the Toshiba. I wouldn't be opposed to getting a laptop w/XP on it if it was cheap. As I mentioned, this will be mainly for email/internet and maybe some word processing. Not for gaming or anything like that.

I like the toshiba a lot because it combines the stuff I'm looking for... 512MB graphics, 17" monitor, hi res, and a full keyboard with numeric keypad. I found this one in their clearance bin which has a fast hard drive and better screen resolution and ships with XP instead of Vista. http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pde ... =clearance
Hoping it arrives by this weekend but it'll prolly be next week. With the Full Tilt upgrade I have to reboot every couple of hours which really sucks. It'll be nice to see more than 1 table at a time too!

I bought an Acer laptop about 1.5yrs ago and its been great so far.
Not sure if you can find any deals on them, but I remember doing a lot of research before buying and found that Acer matched up spec. wise with Toshibas (which was 2nd on my list) but were less expensive.
I doubt this helps but just thought I'd throw it in there.

It does help....thanks!
Acer Aspire Notebook with AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology MK-36
More RAM, bigger HD, same size screen, Vista Premium instead of standard, $50 less than the Toshiba (AMD processor instead of Intel...I have no problem with that). Only available in store at Best Buy....might not be able to find one. Might go hunting today.

The Acers have really nice screens. Did ya see any yet? I looked at them too and liked them but having the numeric keypad is huge for me since I'll be using it for my accounting.
I can't wait for mine to get here. Toshiba website says it's shipped. I had an $80 misclick tonight. Running 4 tables on a laptop with 1024 x 768 max res is just ass. Can't wait to be able to see more than 1 table at a time.

I waited too long last week to get one. Well, in store, anyway. Went to Best Buy Thursday...they didn't have the cheapie Acer (that one is in-store only...can't get it over the interwebby) and they were sold out of the Toshiba. Which is what I expected. I think if it's in the Sunday paper ads, you pretty much have to go Sunday or Monday or get it online. They probably only have one or two, bastards. I might have to get one online and have them ship it to me at work. Don't want to worry about a laptop sitting on my front step getting rained on.
We'll try again this week.

And the winner is:
Acer Aspire 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC
Picked it up Tuesday....played with it a little last night. Luckily, I found my key so I could log into my home network.

Let me know how you like it Snickers. I've been thinking about getting a good laptop. Did you pay $569 for it?? Seems like a good deal..
