useful books for sng players
by mewsiclovr » Mon Dec 11, 2006 12:23 am
Are there any useful books that I should get that I can apply to sng's? I know Theory of Poker is standard, as well as SS2, but are they useful for tourney's at all? How about HoH?

I own them all, but I feel like they might be a little out of date. Harrington overestimates the quality of average SNG opponents.
Now that the port act has passed, the average SNG player is much better than before, but still not as good as Harrington suggests. They are better for higher limit players. ML, if you take these books word for word, you must adapt their strategies for lower limit.
I am planning on going back and reading them again to give you a better input tonight.

Volume 3 is the one I've reread most recently, so it's fresh in my mind. A lot of the hands in that one are from professional players. His hand analysis is spot on, but eliminates a lot of hands that you could easily see in a 6.5/11/15 SNG.
A section of his book is devoted to the bubble. His bubble strategy is totally at odds with ICM calculators and modern SNG bubble strategy (he plays way too tight in the opinion of these methods). He thinks in +$EV and not +tEV. How these two concepts translate I am not a sophisticated enough player to analyze, so take them for what it's worth.
Nevertheless, considering the cost of these books, if they manage to place you in even 3 tournaments they will pay for themselves even at the lower limits, so consider it an investment in your self. My first post may have seemed like HoH was not worth buying, but that is totally false, they are excellent books. Even if you don't think the information is useful, as a poker fan you will enjoy reading them nonetheless.

Sounds like they are more suited for donkaments than sng's? I have not read them but I heard through the grapevine that was the case. I understand he does have a section for sngs, however. Even with that caveat, you guys think they are worth it?

Definitely, even just for the fun of reading them.

OK I think I'll order the first two for now and get the last one later (I don't have enough points to get them all at once).
Thanks for the input guys.

Winning Low Limit Holdem 3rd edition Lee Jones
by redz » Thu Dec 14, 2006 8:24 am
The best text I have found sit'n'go's is Winning Low Limit Holdem 3rd edition Lee Jones, yes u read right. I had the 2nd edition but it fell to pieces and I gave it to a friend, I decided to by the 3rd edition as the book has already paid for itself many times over playing limit. The limit text is improved and he also includes a chapter on No limit Sit'n'go's purely because there is so much money to be made at them. I was playing limit one week day afternoon on party against a bunch of tight players, I was actually stealing blinds at 30c/70c lol. Anyway I had a go at a no limit Sit'n'Go reading the book while I was playing, theres only about 40 pages on sit n go's. I soon realised the sit n goes were 10x as fishy as the limit tables and have'nt gone back to limit since. In 2 weeks I have gone from $47 to $88, had a good run of cards at the start though.
Basically the strategy is play super tight for first 3 blind rounds, steal blinds to maintain stack, then play super aggressive at the end. Its not an in depth text but if you want a simple strategy that will help you build up a bankroll at the lower limits this is it. I see no reason why it wouldnt work at higher limits too (up to $30)

I play $3 sit n go's at party btw. Is Party a rude word here now? seems everyone plays at Poker Stars these days. BTW in case you didnt notice the author of this book is now the manager of Poker Stars.
No, I don't think Party is a rude word here. We just don't play there because a majority of us are Americans.. Even if we're ashamed to admit it sometimes.
I started playing on party about 6 weeks before they shut it down. I made a massive profit there in a short time and now I really miss it.
Oh yeah, back tot the original topic. I don't know of any good sng books, but from everything I've heard HoH is not what you need for that. It's mainly a MTT book and his standards are really tight. I haven't heard anyone says "since I read Hoh I've been killing MTT's"....
Don't get me wrong. Harrington is a great player, but I think his reputation helps his style a lot! And I just don't think being that tight will ever work in an online game.
