Live multi-table balls!
by uncledave » Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:30 am
Myself and a buddy went down to the local card room to try out their Tuesday poker tournament. A £10 buy in with £10 rebuys and then a top up after the break.
So i sit down with my 1500 chips and the announcer says, "starting blinds are 25/50 and will go up every 10 minutes..."
I shuddered and look around my table of miscreants and drunks - it didn't look like we had one decent player among us! The very first hand after i had folded my 10-6o one guy went all in. Called by the guy on his left and his left and his left. 4 people all in on the first hand. Now I'm not going to tell you what they had because you would laugh so hard your ribs would hit the floor, but it was rotten stuff.
Anyway, the 3rd caller won it with a 6-3s when he boated up on the turn. The other starting hands were equally turd. I kid you not. The other players all bought in again.
Immediately on the second hand there were 3 people all in again including two of those that had just bought in. Same result and more rebuys... now isn't this just keek? It went on and on like this until I eventually bust out with a suited ace getting shoved in on the button.
After 3 levels (30mins) the blins were 150-300 and it was just an all-in festival. When I did bust out at this point the guy says to me "aren't you buying in...?" I honestly felt like backhand slapping him one. It was complete trash. I mean how do you play against people that will just rebuy and rebuy and rebuy until there is is no money left in their wallet. I guess it wasn't really what I expected but I know I won't be back.
It's clearly just an apparently cheap tournament designed to get people to buy in and keep on doing so because "it's only another £10". Not for me. No room for playing - just all in or fold.
Anyway - just wanted to tell you about poker tournaments in belfast. Sucks!

Next time:
1. Show up just around the first break
2. Start up a cash game with the people who donks out after rebuys are over
3. Take their $$$ (or £££, whichever the case may be)
4. Wait a week
5. Repeat 1-4

I thought this was a common rebuy strategy. The good thing about rebuys is that there is a LOT more $$ in the pool and FEWER players. Just pretend its a freezeout, but with 3x as many entrants.
