How do I extract on the river? Now that I think about it he has to have a busted draw or something (though I can't figure out what) so I should let him bluff at it by checking.

Yep, good job...readless I'd do the same.
Eventually you will figure out what other people think constitutes a bluff on the river; something small-ish or an overbet most of the time....but until then, I think this is definitely the mathematically correct way to play.
