Goofy tries Triple Draw!
by goofyballer » Wed Mar 15, 2006 6:32 am
Armed only with a read-through of Triple Draw Low from Super System 2's section on it (by Daniel Negreanu), I hit up the $0.01-$0.02 tables on UltimateBet. 32 cents later (after playing either 3-handed or HU with other guys that admittedly don't play TDL either and just wanted a break from HE), the game broke up, and the next full game was located at $1/$2. I was running bad at that fucking penny game anyway, so I figured I'd try it out, playing tight and not risking a whole lot to get a feel for the game. My adventure:
(btw: 1. If the converter fucks up, oops. 2. If I'm wrong in my thought processes, PLEASE CORRECT ME!)
I raised this hand up figuring 7-6-3-2 is a damn good starting hand. I was also hoping to isolate, since I was having an absolutely miserable time playing OOP. Position matters a lot in this game; knowing how many cards people in front of you are drawing help you decide how many you need to draw. OOP, it's much harder. I was basically trying to draw to an 8 or better when possible. Here, I knew that I had 8 outs 3 times to hit what was almost guaranteed to be the winning hand; I missed.

Limping here probably sucks, but I remembered Negreanu saying something about a 2-3 (probably that it's the only three-card draw you'd even think about defending or blind stealing with), so I went with it, and my first draw turned out well. I had a draw to a perfect 8-7, 8-6, or 8-5, and I'd see SB stand pat with enough hands like 9's and 10's before that I was pretty sure my draw would be good if I hit.

I figured 7-3-2 was a good enough starting hand to take a stab in what was looking to be a big pot. My first draw gave me 7-6-5-3-2, the third nuts (I think?), so everything from then on was pretty straightforward: bet and charge the draws.

I got a free play in the BB and the first draw treated me well, giving me a decent 9. I absolutely refused to believe that my opponent drew 3 to a better low to me, so I tried to get maximum value out of my hand without being completely hosed if the little shit really did get that lucky. This was another guy that I'd seen betting with 10's and 9's, so when he raised, I still felt there was a good chance I was ahead.

My input though I'm not very good at TDL, especially having never read anything about it other than some 2p2 postings.
Hand 1: I think I bet round 2 with the great draw even OOP.
Hand 2: I might be tempted to raise round 2. Think free card play with a strong draw if you aren't ahead.
Hand 3: Easy call with 732. Deuces are very valuable cards as they allow you to draw smooth. I would've check raised when you made the 7. You've got about the worst 7 possible, but I'll take my chances.
Hand 4: Draw smooth early/rough late. I ditch the 9 right away.

OMG, this douchebag that has position on me is betting, and I know he's FOS, and I have 2-3-4-7 going into the last draw, and I make a pair of 7's, and he drew 1 too so I bet trying to get him to lay down a king/ace/smaller pair/whatever, AND HE CALLS WITH A PAIR OF FUCKING 4'S!!!! OMG DIE DIE DIE
I donated $35 back today...I was two-tabling the .25/.5 and .5/1 games, which I think hurt my focus a lot. I need to get better before I can do that.
