Hand from a home game last night
by carrera » Sat Mar 11, 2006 8:02 am
NL, 50 buy-in, blinds .25/.5
nearing the end of the night, I raise to 2.5 in UTG with KJo, only SB (a pretty good player with good reading skills) calls.
Flop, 8TQ (2 hearts)
SB checks, I bet out 5, SB raises to 15
I think a bit and call having the OESD, and possibly a K is good. I think the call surpised him.
Turn, 9 (not a heart)
bingo, I hit my card.
SB checks, I say "in that case, I bet 25"
here SB takes a very long time, talking a lot about what I could have, mentioning the J, but saying I would not have called his raise with that.
eventually, he calls.
River, Ah.
SB checks, I check.
I turn over KJ for A high straight.
SB could hardly believe it, took a while to muck (he had AQ). In his defence, he had a lot of beats put on him last night.
Question: Did I make a good call on the flop raise?

Important part of the equation: when you called, what types of hands did you put him on?
You're getting 2.5:1 odds, and you're 6.8:1 to hit the nuts on the turn (4.9:1 to hit a straight, but that includes straights that complete the flush). That means you need to make ~$30 after you hit your card to cover your implied odds. If you're pretty damn sure you can, then call. Otherwise, fold. As the hand played out, you lost Sklansky bucks by calling that bet, because you only made $25 after he called.
btw, bet the river. A solid player is folding a flush draw on the flop after you make a pot-sized bet, indicating a big hand; he didn't draw to a flush like that.

Well he's the kind of guy who can play with any cards when he thinks his opponent is on a draw. So the only thing I really have to go on is that he called the PF raise. But again, he's also willing to defend his blinds.
He could easily have paired the 10 or 8. If he assumes I'm on a draw, he'll raise like that.
So basically, I wasn't really sure
As for not betting the river, I figured I'd only get called if i was beat.

Do you think villain folds two pair/set to a small-ish (1/3-1/2 pot, maybe?) value bet? He already said he didn't think you called with a jack.
