pretty simple pot odds question
by iil_m0lly » Fri Feb 03, 2006 10:39 pm
hero is BB. everybody folds to the SB who just calls.
hero flops a 4 flush. does he have odds to call down?
what if the SB raised preflop. now does here have odds to call down?
same questions for an open ended straight draw.
also what if the button raises, the SB folds. now do we have odds to chase?

Ok, lets just do the math even though I get the impression that you just want simple yes and no answers. If you really want to get good at poker you have to be willing to put in work.
HU with you and the SB there will be getting 3:1 if the Sb bets into you on the flop. Lets say you have, 98s on a 24T board and you have 4 to a flush. You dont have odds to call down because you will only make a flush 4:1.
If the SB raised and you called, then you would be getting 5:1 on the flop call, which is fine to call, but I think raising is better. This flops is likely to miss your opponent and you might be able to win it with a continuation bet on the turn.
OESD is about 5:1

consider that i may have to call the turn bet too. so i guess my question really isn't that simple. do i have odds knowing that i call the flop and miss on the turn then i'll have to call another bet.

You also have the implied odds of being paid off on the river though. You'll only call the turn when you don't connect, but you'll collect at least one bet on the river when you do hit. So you can take slightly less early in the hand.
You've always got the odds to raise though! If the small blind is really riding the short bus he'll call then give you a free card, which is a hell of a deal. If he's "smart" he'll three bet you and lead the turn again, and then get beat the hell up next time around when you actually have something. Rarely you'll even find the Perfect Patsy who's "smart" enough to punish you when you draw and "skilled" enough to make a big lay down when you hit. Oh, to live in Poker Heaven!

ok all of your answers are great. but i'm looking for more general answers. for example i'm multitabling, and just want to know what i should do everytime against a random player. should i be raising my draws, calling them down, or just folding right away.

1. Only mess with open ended straight draws or better.
2. Fold heads up.
3. Fold in three way pots that were not raised before the flop.
4. Call single bets in three way pots that were raised before the flop.
5. Bet/Raise in four or more way pots when first or last to act. Call in the middle.
That will severly crimp your winrate, but should be profitable if you only draw to the nuts and don't mess with paired boards.
