Favorite Poker Book
by cj hames » Mon Jan 30, 2006 7:23 pm
My favorite poker book is Play Poker Like the Pro's by Phil Hellmuth. Why? Because it taught me that if you play that tight you'll never win any money.

Tournament poker by Cloutier and McEvoy, because it piqued my interest in learning other games besides hold'em. I have practiced a lot more at omaha and razz and I have noticed that I place in the $ more in tourneys that I play.

Poker Books
by labatsman » Mon Jan 30, 2006 8:17 pm
My initial exposure to hold em was thru Television and we didn't get that much in Canada. There was no hold em played in Ontario Casinos till 3 years ago. We occasionally got together and played poker which was always dealer’s choice. We tried hold em but we weren’t sure how the betting worked
I am going to mention a few books because you learn from all of them. Good or bad. First book I bought was Phil Hellmouth’s book “Play poker like the pros”. When I read a book, I will reread and reread till I think I got it.
It was written early by Phil and concentrated mainly on Limit Poker. Greenhorn me didn't know the difference and tried to use limit techniques in a no limit games. It didn’t work that well for me.
Gary Carson “The Complete book of Hold 'em poker” taught me ideas like starting hands, How many outs I had, I had no idea what this meant before. This was the first time I ever realized that Math was involved in Poker. I learned about what types of players there were- aggressive, passive, tight, loose etc.
The book that keeps every thing simple is T.J Cloutier and Tom McEvoys Championship hold em poker. It actually gave practice hands which amazed me. I also remember this advice, "Either Raise or fold, the only time you call is if you are trapping your opponent"
I borrowed Brunson’s Super System 1 and incorporated everything that Sklansky wrote in the h/l stud section which taught me how to play the game. I picked up from Brunson how to win a few small pots so that you can challenge for some bigger pots.
I have about 10 books now and keep increasing that. I don’t have a favorite book but I do learn something from them all. What’s depressing is that so many players have never read any of the great books out there, have never read a magazine on poker or even a forum and get all their education from T.V. and internet poker.

tournement poker by cloutier and mcevoy, because it peaked my interest in learning other games besides hold'em. I have practiced alot more at omaha and razz and I have noticed that I place in the $ more in tourneys that I play.
Grammar Nazi notes:
Capitalize names of books and authors.
Incorrect: "Peaked my interest." Correct: "Piqued my interest."
Incorrect: "alot." Correct: "a lot." A good alternative is the word, "much."

Never read a poker book, & haven't yet learnt to play good poker,
heh, to date I suck, the best lesson is losing money & trying not to repeat the mistake.

Well, I've only read The Theory of Poker and Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players. I'm probably going to get some more books in the near future, but these helped me out a good amount. They have definitely been worth the $55.
David Sklansky's books were so great because they analyze poker in it's mathmatical aspect, not so much the gambling. By breaking poker down into a game entirely based on probability, it made it easier for me to understand actual hand strengths. These books, I'm told, are different because most other books talk about reading your opponent, when to bluff, etc. I think I've taught myself these things through hours of play, but the math behind the cards took a little bit more work in learning. I don't like looking at Poker and admitting the gambling aspect of it, I'd prefer to know the numbers and get my money in with the better hand.

best book

The best poker book I have read is Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker. It is concise and gives you guidlines rather than rules.

"What poker book have I read, and how did it help my game?"
I must honestly say that I've never read a poker book, and I've chosen not to for one reason- because I don't want to OVERTHINK my strategies anymore than I already do. I already tend to overthink things; to focus more on the cards that can beat me instead of the cards that my opponent or opponents most likely have based on how they played them.
I was much worse at this when I first started playing online poker. I would always think of what my opponents could "possibly" have, and would tend to get bluffed out a lot as a result. Through playing, I discovered that generally, your hand is better than you think, and an opponent will most likely try to bluff you at the river instead of after the flop or turn.
I still fold more hands than I probably should, and my biggest fear is that I'll either become more aggressive or more tight than I should after reading one of the various poker books available.

by bungys » Tue Jan 31, 2006 1:24 am
Ive never read a book but ive spent a fair amount of time watching poker shows and learning the ways of online poker which is totally different from the live game.I tend to lose a bit online and learn from those mistakes as long as a dont take to long a break from poker ie.a couple days or so...because i find i come back rusty and in need of "getting the groove back"

well i lurned how to play in a study group at college. the have been may things that i have found helpful in my poker playin, but i think the retard study program helped me the most. we wood play for munny and my teachah wood winn most times, my aces never seemed to beat his foors. he taught me to bluff alot and that really helped me although i wood always need to call my mom foor moor lunch munny. i allways liked my teacher even though he beat me at poker all the time, he was a big influence on me in between shock treatments.
as far as the best poker book i have red it would have to be it would have to be poker for dummies. since everyone always calls mee dummy it was perfect. i lurned about the fold and call buttons i saw there picture and my teachah drew them on the table. that really helped me to press a button. i reelly look forward to the freerole and beatin you guys. i bluff a lot and think i can win.

My favorite poker book is Hold'em Poker For Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth. What I learned that help my game most is how to play the first two cards well. I often use the tight game recommendations, i.e., to throw away hand rank 5 in the 5th to act position. I usually play hand rank 3 or better in the 5th to act position, etc. This leads to folding a lot of hands, but I have the patience to win. Well, good luck to all at the tournaments.
