Need some help with connectivity issues.

I'm not a computer guy (just a software guy) and I've got major issues with my connectivity to the Internet because I recently put in a D-Link WiFi so that my kids could have access. Additionally, I just recently had a friend come over and help me better secure my home PC with F-Secure.
Anyway, I've only been able to get through to the D-Link people once and then they told me it was a problem with my internet provider and that I should call them. I called them and they told me that I was definitely getting a signal from them and that I needed to call D-Link to correct the problem. Now, I can't seem to get through to D-Link; they put me on hold forever. Does anyone have any insight that might be able to help me out?
I'm at work now, but if someone can I'd appreciate any help tonight to correct this so that I can have a shot at playing in the freeroll Monday night. Thanks in advance to anyone that might be able to give me some advice or can help me.

You didn't give a very good description of what the problem is, but I assume you mean you bought a DLink router of some kind. What kind of internet access do you have? Dial-up, cable, dsl, etc? The first thing to check would be if the router is getting an IP address (I'll assume you don't have a static address). What happens when try and go to the router config site (http://192.168.0.1)?

Yup

Sorry about the limited description, I started writing it out and my boss came in. I hit the "submit" button without much thought, in order send it and to get it of the screen as quick as possible.

Cable, through Time Warner (see I meant to at least put this in the originally post but rushed it).

This would be one of those:
I'll look through the manual when I get home, see what it says and get back to you, but that's my problem in a nutshell. In the mean time, what's a static address?

Not to be a jerk, but which one is it? Or is it both?
Also, does the PC that you are playing poker on have the router installed, or are you getting the wireless signal from the router as your connection?
The reason I ask is because I had a authentication problem with my old laptop when I was receiving the wireless signal. (It never happened on the machine with the router.) I know how to fix that issue if that is the case.

Here's how it works: Most of these home "routers" have a web server (software) built in them. You go to http://192.168.0.1 Edit: It could be http://192.168.1.1, I can't remember. (usually it's one of those) to access the router's setup web pages. That address doesn't go over the internet, it's local to you. I read that some of these DLink routers don't have the internal web setup, but hopefully yours does. Since you are getting connected, it sounds like you may be having a timeout issue. Hopefully there is some type of option called "Keep-alive" or "Always connected" under the web site you find when you go to the above address. That's the very first thing I'd look into. If you can post the model of your router, when you get home, that would probably help.
Also, if you haven't turned on WEP (or WPA if it has it), then you should do that. You need to change the default password on the router too. It should explain how to do that stuff in the docs. Those are the minimum security steps you need. Here's a link to a mag that has an article on wireless security if you want to get hardcore. http://www.insecuremagazine.com/INSECURE-Mag-1.pdf

No, you’re not being a jerk, I should have specified. The connection is going in/out.
I'll look into your advice and suggestions when I get home. Hopefully these suggestions will clear this up for me. Thanks for the help; I'll let you know later tonight what I find out.

EVCELLENT!!!
Okay for the links you gave me, one didn't seem to work for me (the second one) and the other required a login. However, configuring the router seemed to make perfect sense so I followed up on it and did a Google search for D-Link to find their site a quick trip to their FAQ's gave me the numbers I needed to put into my control panel. I rebooted and my connectivity on Poker Stars is now steady at 100%.
I then asked my son to pull up something he knew that would tell him how his connection was doing. Turns out that he's still got a poor connection, but we were expecting his to be pretty crappy anyway with the WiFi because the room we have their (my three boys) computers in is at the other end of the house and there’s a solid interior wall that the signal has to go through. That shouldn’t be much of a problem because I was already planning on putting the router on the other side of the wall (i.e. my wife’s office in the kitchen; isn’t that justice?). Hopefully without any walls that will bump up his connection. This is great because now I know I'll be able to start my bonus whoring run and even make the freeroll at EP. Thanks guys for getting me going in the right direction.
