Ahhh...you gotta try and catch the first 15 minutes...that's the whole setup at KGB's place. There's also a bunch of amusing poker references as Mike McD gathers up his bankroll, hidden in books like super system and Caro's book of tells.
I just watched again last night as well. The first time I saw it, I had never heard of any other kind of poker than 5 card draw. Once you get all the poker lingo, it's a whole other movie.

I've only watched it once (rented it). I got the DVD for Christmas last year and haven't even opened it up. I really need to watch it again. Good movie.

It's definitely the best poker movie out there, but the last time I watched it, a few days ago, it REALLY depressed me.
I used to want to be Mike, now I feel sorry for him. He constantly make REALLY bad decisions. My wife and I were watching it, and during the beginning with KGB, she said, "That was a big mistake, putting all his chips in on that hand."
But I explained to her, that it was nearly impossible not to lose his entire stack on that hand. The big mistake was playing way above his bankroll to begin with.
Once you understand good play and good bankroll management, you understand how totally sad this movie is.

I've seen the movie so many times that I keep adding some alternative dialogue. For instance, the scene on the street where Jo is confronting Mike about the fact that he lied to her about playing cards:
Mike: I didn't think you'd understand...
Jo: Understand what?
Mike: Last night I sat down at this card table, and I felt alive for the first time since I got busted at KGB's
Jo: You just told me you felt alive for the first time at a fucking card table?!!
What's that supposed to make me understand?!
Jo walks away
Here's where I would continue the scene...
Mike suddenly stops and realizes what he's done. He realizes that he hasn't had sex in weeks and that he's really horny right now.
Mike: Jo, wait!... I'm really sorry! (Jo turns around)
Mike: I take back what I said about feeling alive... I mean... there was that night when you did that "lean back" thing like Sharon Stone did in Basic Instinct...
